http://www.politico.com/story/2015/02/democrats-might-skip-benjamin-netanyahu-speech-114891.html DUE 9 FEB 2015. Who is Benjamin Netanyahu?? Who asked him to speak before Congress?? What did President Obama think about this invitation?? What implications will a Democratic boycott create for international relations with Israel??

  1. Democrats have had a hard time standing behind Barrack Obama's decision to publicly support Isreal. Benjamin Netanyahu is Isreal's current prime minister and a prominent politician. His speech about proposed deals with Iran sparked criticism around Washington and American Jewish communities. Democrat and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi from California invited the Prime Minister without speaking with the White House at first. President Obama's reaction to the invitation is that he is not telling the Democratic representatives to go or not to go. He is leaving the decision's up to them. A Democratic boycott could be a bad thing for the international relations with Isreal. Not only will the Prime Minister feel un-welcomed and shaky about the relationship with the United States but the people of Isreal will feel the same. If President Obama does not have the support from his party then it could mean a bump in the road to their international relationship.

  2. Benjamin Netanyahu is the Prime Minister of Israel. It was the House Speaker, John Boehner and Israeli ambassador Ron Dermer. They asked Netanyahu to speak before Congress about the dangers that Iran poses. Netanyahu believes that Obama is naive in his relations with Iran. Obama is trying to conclude a deal about curbing nuclear programs in Iran. Apparently, Obama wasn’t informed of Netanyahu’s speech. Obama denied the Oval Office meeting with Netanyahu. Obama and his aides are not pushing anyone to go to the speech. But Obama isn’t pushing anyone to go to the speech as well. The implications of the Democratic boycott will include: a severed relationship between America and Israel. This may lead to no more bipartisan relationships.

  3. Benjamin Netanyahu is the current Prime Minister of Israel and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. Netanyahu is doing a public speech on March 3rd, to many of the Democrats’ disappointment. Members of the Democratic Party are threatening not to attend Netanyahu’s address to Congress because the relationship between him and the President. President Obama has been trying to close a deal with Iran to close its nuclear programs, but Netanyahu greatly opposes. He has called the President naive, much to the displeasure of many Democrats. Vice President Joe Biden has already declared his absence to the address. House Speaker John Boehner, the Republican representative from Ohio, and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer provided the platform for which Netanyahu would be able to discuss the dangers in negotiating with Iran. President Obama does not necessarily like the invitation from Netanyahu. Netanyahu was already denied an appointment with Obama in the Oval Office and the Democratic Party has not told any of its representatives to go to the address. If the Democrats decide not to attend Netanyahu’s address it will show that the two powers are not necessarily on good terms. We already know that the Democratic Party does not agree with him declaring an address during this time of election and they feel it is not wise for them to go. The relationship between the two nations will not be as stable as it was before.

  4. More than a handful of House Democrats, including Joe Biden, are saying that they won’t be attending the address on March 3. Benjamin Netanyahu, who is the prime minster of Israel, will be addressing Congress on this day. John Boehner, the House Speaker, and Ron Dermer, the Israeli Ambassador, devised Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech. The Republicans instructed him to address Congress because they wanted Congress to be aware of the deal with Iran. President Obama is indifferent towards the invitation. Obama recently denied meeting Benjamin Netanyahu while he was in Washington DC and he is neither telling Democrats that they should or shouldn’t go to the address on March 3. As of Tuesday though, many Democrats and Jewish members will not be attending Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech. A Democratic boycott will put a damper on the United States and Israeli relationship. The relationship is currently stronger than it has been in the past so boycotting the speech could alter it for the worse. But some say that boycotting the speech could be a good thing because according to Dylan Williams (director of government affairs) “it’s fairly clear this isn’t about honoring the U.S.-Israel special relationship. It’s about abusing it in order to undermine the president and his foreign policy.”

  6. Benjamin Netanyahu is the Israeli Prime Minister. President Obama has been working with Iran to make a deal to stop its nuclear programs over great opposition from Netanyahu. House Speaker John Boehner invited Netanyahu to speak on a prominent Washington platform before Congress to address what he sees as dangers of the proposed deal with Iran. It also appears that this meeting is based on the perception that Obama was weakened after the Democratic defeat in the midterm elections. Not to mention, this meeting is also scheduled to take place just two weeks before Netanyahu faces reelection, and is suspected to be an effort to gain support in his political campaign. Obama has complained of a breach in protocol concerning the invitation to Netanyahu to speak before Congress, because Speaker Boehner invited him to speak without first consulting him. The White House issued a statement saying that they leave it to Democratic members to decide whether they will attend the speech or not. In light of this statement, many Democrats have stated that they plan to leave the Prime Minister in front of a lot of empty seats. Though the left-leaning Israel advocacy group has not been telling members of Congress to skip the speech, they have promoted an email urging Boehner to move the speech until after the Israeli elections. The implications that a Democratic boycott would create for international relations with Israel is that it may create a partisan relationship between America and Israel. It may create a stronger relationship between Republicans and Israeli officials than between American and Israeli officials. It is imperative to American officials that we keep our relationship with Israel bipartisan.

  7. This article discusses a dozen of house democrats that are planning on skipping the March 3rd address according to the lawmakers and the aides. Many of the democrats are trying to support Israel while at the same time staying close to what Obama agrees or disagrees with. The article states that Obama is trying to make a deal with Iran to curb its nuclear programs over vehement opposition from Netanyahu, who has expressed concerns that the U.S. president is being naive. Benjamin Netanyahu is not only an Israeli politician and the current Prime Minister of Israel. He also currently serves as a member of the Knesset, Chairman of the Likud party and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. The republicans told him to speak. The article states, "The speech was devised by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer to provide Netanyahu a prominent Washington platform to warn about the dangers of the proposed deal with Iran." President Obama denied an Oval Office meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu which makes it seem that he does not really want to be invited. The article says that throughout Obama's time in office, the prime minister has elbowed his way into American politics to corner and game the president. This time, without much nudging from the White House beyond a complaint about breached protocol, Netanyahu’s speech has sparked criticism across Washington and in the American Jewish community as well as among diplomats, Israeli officials and domestic political opponents who include his own former ambassador to Washington. I believe that this means that Obama is not very happy with this and is annoyed by them. Some implications that may occur for international relations with Israel is that many people will begin to criticize this and it will become globally known. A man said, “Frankly, the strong U.S.-Israel relationship, bipartisan relationship through the years, is stronger than any perceived slight or dispute,” Engel said. “I care about the U.S.-Israel relationship. It has always been bipartisan and will continue to be.” Therefore, we know that the United States relationship with Israel will remain strong.

  8. Trying to close a deal with Iran to curb its nuclear programs, Democrats have had to balance the support of Israel with backing Obama. Benjamin Netanyahu is the current Israeli Prime Minister. Invited by House Speaker John Boehner, Netanyahu is wanted to give a speech to warn about the dangers of a proposed deal with Iran and to express a perception that Obama was weakened after midterm elections gave Republicans control of both houses. Netanyahu has expressed concerns that the President is being naïve with the situation. As the prime minister’s speech has sparked controversy and criticism throughout Washington and in American Jewish Communities, President Obama states that he will not tell Democrats to attend or not, that it is their decision. Vice President Joe Biden and his office won’t commit to the decision making process and have not released nor made and final decisions about attending. Many Democrats, including Jewish members, have said that it is likely that the Prime Minister will be looking at a good amount of empty seats. Though some say that it is not an official boycott, the uproar of the invitation has made Israelis worried, hoping that the situation will be resolved before the attendance of the Prime Minister. With the criticism among reps., its clear that the relationship is not about honoring the relationship between the U.S. and Israel. Meanwhile reps. also state that “the strong U.S.-Israeli relationship, bipartisan relationship through the years, is stronger than any perceived slight or dispute. It has always been bipartisan and will continue to be.”

  9. Benjamin Netanyahu is the Israeli prime minister. The speech was devised by House Speaker John Boehner and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer. Multiple democrats are choosing not to go the speech. Benjamin has already been denied an oval office meeting with Obama. This democratic boycott is bringing Israel a negative feel with them. Not all democrats, however, are backing away from the invitation. This isn't the only priority on Obama's mind. He's closing in on a deal with Iran on nuclear weapons.

  10. Benjamin Netanyahu, also known as Bibi, is an Israeli politician and the current Prime Minister of Israel. Mr. Netanyahu is also currently serving as a member of the Knesset, Chairman of the Likud party and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. The House of Democrats are thinking about skipping the March 3rd address because of the relationship between Israeli prime minister and President Barack Obama. Their relationship isn’t that great according to lawmakers and aides. Mr. Nethanyahu has already been denied an Oval Office meeting with Obama. Like the article said “Netanyahu’s already been denied an Oval Office meeting with Obama. Secretary of State John Kerry has no plans to meet with him while he’s in town, a State Department official told POLITICO on Tuesday.” Benjamin’s speech has sparked criticism across Washington and in the American Jewish community. The president’s reaction to the invitation was that he is not telling Democrats to skip the speech, but his isn’t telling Democrats not to go either. So pretty much, the president is not telling them what to do, they have a choice if they want to attend or not. A Democratic boycott would be a bad thing because currently the relationship is strong as of right now, and boycotting the speech could alter the relationship into a bad one. In the article it stated “Frankly, the strong U.S.-Israel relationship, bipartisan relationship through the years, is stronger than any perceived slight or dispute,” Engel said. “I care about the U.S.-Israel relationship. It has always been bipartisan and will continue to be.” Which means that the United States and Israel will have a strong and good relationship.

  12. On March third many democrats, along with the Vice President Joe Biden, are planning on skipping a speech for a joint meeting of Congress with Benjamin Netanyahu, who is the current prime minister of Israel. While President Obama is on the way to making a deal with Iran to restrict their nuclear programs, Democrats of the House have to find a way to equally support Israel while still supporting the President. After reaching out to the Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer, together the Speaker of the House John Boehner arranged for the Prime Minister to speak before Congress. This being the lowest point of their relationship, it’s no surprise that they aren't on good terms, judging off the fact that Netanyahu has been denied a meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office already. Obama and his cabinet aren't trying to tell the other Democrats in congress not to attend the speech, but aren't saying to go either, “We defer to Democratic member if they’d like to attend or not.” Many of the Democratic representatives feel indifferent about it and some have not preference whether to go or not. “It wouldn't be an official boycott. I wouldn't announce that I wasn't going,” says Representative John Yarmuth from Kentucky. Many are urging John Boehner to postpone their speech until after the Israeli elections if it isn't going to be canceled. “Frankly, the strong U.S.-Israel relationship, bipartisan relationship through the years, is stronger than any perceived sight or dispute… It has always been bipartisan and will continue to be,” says Representative Eliot Engel of New York. But if Obama doesn't do something to show some kind of interest, than the relationship with Israel with just continue to get worse and maybe affect other international relationships.

Obama recently denied meeting Benjamin Netanyahu while he was in Washington DC and he is neither telling Democrats that they should or shouldn’t go. 14. Benjamin Netanyahu is currently the Prime Minister of Israel and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. On March 3rd, Netanyahu is holding a public speech, leading to the discouragement for the Democrats to attend. Many of the Democrats claimed not to attend because of the relationship he has with the President. President Obama has been working with Iran to create a deal that stops the nuclear programs, but Netanyahu opposed the Presidents opposition. Netanyahu has expressed that the Presidents is being naïve with the situation, offending many Democrats. Vice President Joe Biden has already announced his absence from the address. From Netanyahu’s speech creating controversy and criticism throughout all of Washington and in American Jewish communities, President Obama states that he will not tell Democrats to attend or not, that it is their own decision. President Obama is neutral towards the invitation; he denied meeting Netanyahu while he was in Washington DC. A Democratic boycott would put stress on the situation, weakening the relationship between the United States and Israel. This is the strongest relationship the two have had up until this time, but boycotting it might reverse all the progress we’ve made. But, it could also become a positive thing by boycotting the speech. According to Dylan Williams, director of government affairs, “it’s fairly clear this isn’t about honoring the U.S.-Israel special relationship. It’s about abusing it in order to undermine the president and his foreign policy.”

What president Obama thinks about this invitation is he seems not to have been updated since November, when Obama’s own poll numbers started moving up again, and though Netanyahu’s Likud Party is still leading in Israeli polls miscalculated the backlash in Israel from putting his relationship with the American president on the line. He also serves as a member of the Knesset, Chairman of the Likud party and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. 44. Benjamin Natanyahu is Israel's prime minister. House speaker, John Boehner, was involved in arranging the speech. Obama has not spoken out on the situation, which leads me to believe he is either neutral or against it. He seems to be avoiding discussion of his attendance because it puts him in an uncomfortable position. I think it would be wise for some democrats to attend the speech, even if only to avoid conflict. We do not need any more tension with other countries. I think Obama is doing the right thing in avoiding the press. If he does not plan on attending the speech that's fine and he does not need to voice that decision. Sometimes taking the backseat is the smartest thing to do. The speech will blow over and people will stop talking about it. I don't even know why this makes news. Obama does not need to attend everything nor should he have to explain himself. He may just want the day off.

If the Democrats go through with "unofficially" boycotting the speech planned to take place on March 3, it will keep the two countries staying on bad terms. They already haven't had a good relationship. Personally, I think it would only be professional and respectful if the Congressmen show up to listen to his speech. The Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and the Israeli Ambassador, Ron Dermer are the ones who asked the prime minister to before Congress. They want to discuss the dangers of dealing Iran. Obama has denied the meeting with Netanyahu and he is not telling the Democrats whether or not they should go to the address. The United States’ relation with Israel has been very strong, but the Democrats boycott could make it worse. The president is a very smart man at this juncture because anybody, especially the press can twist his words around and we could have war on our hands. At this point the president has no feelings he is at a natural position right now and I feel as though he will stay there. President Obama tried to conclude a deal to Iran to close its nuclear programs, bu Netanyahu disagreed with the President, and stated that he is naive.
