Northeast Corridor braces for 'potentially historic' snowstorm

A few days ago, the National Weather Service predicted that there would be very harsh snow conditions that could be dangerous for people to continue their daily routines. Across the northeast and New England, there was an estimated one to three feet of snow that would hit. The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning and said that this would probably be one of the biggest snowstorms in NYC history. They alerted that people could not be on the streets due to the dangerous effects that this snowstorm could bring. The snowstorm is a major problem for government officials because they need to be prepared and come up with a plan incase. Government officials across the northeast and New England came up with different restrictions and living assignments for their citizens. For example, Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City implemented travel bans for non-emergency vehicles past 11 p.m. on the road. Only emergency vehicles would be operating; therefore, people had to stock up on all of the materials that they would need before the storm began. This is a problem for Florida because all of the flights leaving those areas were cancelled. People who were trying to leave Florida or trying to come to Florida wouldn’t be able to because the flights were cancelled and wouldn’t be able to leave until a few days later. This is a problem for power companies in both New England and Florida because “while snow by itself doesn’t normally pose a serious problem, heavy snow and strong winds can increase the possibility of downed wires and power outages,” said Latka.

They predicted that the city would get one to three feet of snow, ceasing all transport, paralyzing the city for days. Many people thoroughly prepared for this historic storm that would hit on Monday and Tuesday. This snowstorm is a problem for government officials because they have had to shut down all of their offices in anticipation for the storm. They are all losing work days and pay and have had to deliver the bad news to the citizens as well as prepare them for the worst situation. Also, the government officials have had to make decisions on restrictions for the public, such as curfews for all modes of transportation. This storm is a problem for Florida because all the people who live in the New England who want try to leave and come to warmer states, cannot. All flight are cancelled to and from the New England are to Florida. The snow is a problem for the power companies in New England and Florida because the strong gusts of wind could damage the wires, causing power outages. And, some of our power lines are connected to those in the Northern states, so some homes in Florida have a chance of losing power.

ReplyDeleteThis snowstorm is a problem for the Government because they needed to shut down many Government offices, streets, and flights. Because of this, people are not able to work and make money. This storm is a problem in Florida because people are trying to get out of the way of the storm by traveling to Florida but, because of the cancelled flights, people are not able to make the trip down here. The storm is a problem for power companies because this storm is capable of damaging the wires and thus, causing power outages in the cities during the storm. This will cause people to be in their homes during a snow storm without heat and electricity to make hot food.

ReplyDeleteThe snowstorm is a major problem for government officials because instead of dealing with government issues, civilians have to be secured. Airplane flights and highways are disabled for a period of time as well. The usual flow of business as usual is disabled. The snowstorm is a problem for Florida because we are on the coat. The snowstorm brings hurricane-force winds and low temperatures. Since Florida is a peninsula and used to hurricanes, this isn't good. The snowstorm is a problem for power companies because electricity will be shut down. Power companies will be postponed from providing services and money.

This is due to more than 6,500 flights, in and out of the region, being closed. New York City's subways and buses planned to shut down completely. Commuter railroads across the Northeast announced plans to stop running overnight. Causing workers to scramble to get home before roads became impassable. This is a problem for Florida, because anyone trying to go from Florida up to New York, will now have to cancel their plans. The same goes for anyone trying to get out of New York to get to Florida. There is also a major problem from the snowstorm for power companies. As stated in the article by, Latka. "While snow by itself doesn’t normally pose a serious problem, heavy snow and strong winds can increase the possibility of downed wires and power outages." So it was planned that there will be many calls going out for the company to fix the wires. Even though it has been announced for people not to leave their homes during the snowstorm. “These conditions will also make it difficult for our crews to get around and safely respond to any outages. We ask for our customers’ patience and cooperation as we work to restore service as quickly as possible.” It will be dangerous for the businesses to send workers out during the snowstorm. So, they probably won't in hopes of avoiding a lawsuit from one of their employees. In the possible event that someone in New Yorks power goes out, they will have to most likely wait until after the snowstorm before being able to fix the power chord.

This would make them unable to travel from place to place in order to conduct appropriate government business. It is also noted that government offices were closed in this region. This snowstorm was also a problem for Florida from an economic stand point, because it stopped the transportation of northeastern goods to Florida. This storm was a major problem for power companies because there was the possibility of large scale power outages for long periods of time, which would significantly decrease the amount of income for privatized electrical companies.

In order to do this, the government banned many transportations areas and set a curfew for their residents to make sure they were in their homes and not out on the street where they could be in a hazardous area. Expecting about two to three feet of snow along with hurricane-like winds of up to 75 miles per hour, each state had to take similar precautions for all of the citizens to stay safe in this horrid weather. Governors in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire had issued an emergency travel ban on the roads, and in some people will be fined $300 if violated. New York was ready with more ambulances and other emergency cars ready to go just in case something was to occur; taking extra measures after “learning their lesson the hard way,” and some motorist were stuck in the snow for more than 24 hours. New York City went dark; offices were closed, but grocery stores were packed with many people trying to get last minute things they’ll need. Government officials need to make safety measures possible to keep the people of their respective state safe. This may seem like it is just a problem for those northeast states but as a whole, it affects the entire country. 6,500 flights were canceled, making thousands stuck there till Wednesday when it’s safe for the pilots to take off again, thus affecting many, including us down here in Florida. Government officials had a lot of decision making to do in such little time due to the storm showing up on the maps only a day before it hit. Massive blizzard warnings, shutting down of businesses, schools, the subway and roads were just a few decisions the northeast state government officials had to make. Cancelled flights and curfews were also in effect. The canceling of flights is definitely something that effects Florida considering all the snow birds that try to make their way down here. 6,500 flights were cancelled and I bet that nearly half of them were coming down here for the warmth! Power companies were on their toes with the storms arrival. Wind gusts up to 75mph were lingering towards the east coast ready to knock out the power causing the power companies to get ready to light up the cites again.

If they close down, it means they wouldn’t be able to get paid. Also, government officials have to prepare everything to keep everyone save and protected from the snowstorm. Another reason would be that they are losing money. New York City's subways and busses are planning to shut down, railroads across the Northeast aren't planning on running overnight, more than 6,500 flights in and out of region has been canceled and citizens trying to get to safety are some of the results of this snowstorm. The government officials are practically forced to stay in. This is a problem for the state of Florida because anyone who is trying to get back to Florida or trying to visit Florida can't because of the flights being canceled. More than 65,000 flights were canceled and commuters also announced the plans to stop running overnight throughout the storm. With an expected 75 mph winds, government officials were expected with jobs to stock up each region with salt and emergency service. Each of the mayors and governors of each region were trusted to set in place a curfew for all of the people to be at home for before the storm were to start and to ensure safety. Authorities banned travel in New York City and Long Island and violators could be fined $300. The heavy snow and strong winds increase the possibility of downed wires and power outages. Along with over 6500 flights getting cancelled, and in NYC the subways and buses are getting shut down by 11pm. Boston is supposed to have 2-3 feet of snow, NY 1 1/2 -2 feet of snow, and Philadelphia more than a foot. In Ney York the Mayor said they have 250,000 tons of salt on hand and will have 40% more ambulances ready to go than usual. Many restrictions were made within different states. They had fines in NY and Long Island for people who violated those restrictions, which was $300. Everything was closed in NY, NJ, CT, MA, and NH from shops, offices, markets, and etc. This is a problem for the government officials because their citizens will have power outages, and will be without power for several days. It's a problem for Florida because this storm brings hurricane force winds, and the cancelation of flights to and from Florida. Truthfully its a problem for NE and FL because they can get power outages there to, and it would affect the power companies as well.

Snow is not foreign to this part of the world, but this amount of snow is not normal. The more snow, the more dangerous the conditions of the road can potentially be. With that being said travel had to be put on hold for the safety of the public. Electric services similar to FPL will be in full force for the next few days to combat the power outages but that is not where the problem lies. Residents were told to stay indoors until the storm passes which in turn people will not get paid for the next two to three days. The officials had to make this decision to protect the public and although some repercussion may take affect this was the right decision to avoid controversy. Travel including all flights have been canceled and this will be a problem for airlines as well as many of the passengers. With all of the problems this snow storm will cause there is still some problems people do not address. With the snow and ice on the roads there will be an excess of 250,000 tons of salt. This is money that had to be spent or once again controversy would arise. All in all I feel as though the government has handled this situation fairly well.
ReplyDeleteThis snowstorm is a huge obstacle for government officials because this potentially enormous, history-making blizzard may leave cities paralyzed for a few days; limited movement gives way for a standstill in the workplace, school place, and everywhere for that matter. People are facing thousands of flight cancellations and the government's primary focus is the health of the people. These record breaking, hurricane-like winds may also cause power outages and flooding in certain areas. This may cause a serious problem for Florida because our primary income comes from tourism and most of our tourists come from the Northern region of the world, with airports being temporarily crippled tourism in Florida is likely to decrease and on top of this economic hindrance we will likely suffer a backlash of this cold weather here in our mostly sunny state. Power companies will experience a multitude of problems as they cannot easily maneuver through the many feet of snow in order to correct any power issues or outages. Also, it is said that as a result of this, those who do experience power outages will likely be without power for several days. Furthermore, power outages may occur here, in Florida, as well due to the serious weather conditions up north.

The government officials can’t work in their offices to get their usual income. Barely anyone is allowed out in the storm which causes stores to be closed down and no revenue being brought in from those taxes as well. Also, anyone who planned on travelling up north from Florida has now hit a bump in the road with the blizzard. They lose a lot of money during this time. Having to cancel incoming and outgoing flights in and out of the affected region, city bus and subway transportation also ceases. It was a huge problem because now the people who were at work have to scramble to find a way to get home before the storm hits. It's also a problem for Florida because all those people living up North who want to try to escape to warmer weather cannot due to the cancellation of thousands of flights. This is a major problem for government officials because they have to close down their offices to prepare for the major snow storm. People won't get paid if the offices are closed down. Also, government officials will lose money because they have to make safety preparations for the snow storm. This is a problem for Florida because Floridians that visited those states are unable to get back home atleast for a few days. No one could go to work, meaning that many things had to delayed. This is problem for Florida because people who want to go back there or go on vacation there can't go. Power companies are also effected because power outages means that they are getting less money. It will also be difficult for electric companies crews to get around and safely respond to any outages. ReplyDeleteGovernment officials were stressing. I am actually surprised at how much this was blown up. I would not expect officials to prepare so much for this because we frequently seem to have scares like this. Shutting down the roads and setting up shelters you would think the world is coming to an end. It is nice to see them taking precaution I guess? Maybe the same attention should be put towards everyday problems- just imagine officials setting up more shelters for homeless vets and children! Why is this a problem for Florida? Hmm I don't think it is. Some seem to think we will have issues because people couldn't get back up north. This is a minor setback, not a "problem" though; delays happen all the time they will get over it and be home in a week, no problem. Power companies may lose a weeks worth of profit but ultimately it won't leave a major dent in their pocket. All in all life goes on, as long as nobody dies we shouldn't stress it too much. Scaring the population via news exaggeration is ridiculous. Every week people are running scared, for what? We are all going to be okay.

"This will most likely be one of the largest blizzards in the history of New York City" - a quote from Bill de Blasio, the mayor of NYC. This blizzard is a problem for government officials because their offices and buildings were closed. This is a problem for Florida because anyone trying to go from Florida to New York (or vice versa) will have their flights cancelled. Also, power companies are probably gritting their teeth hoping that their wires down fall due to snowstorms and hurricane-like wind. Boston was expected to get 2 to 3 feet of snow, New York 1½ to 2 feet, and Philadelphia more than a foot. This is a problem for government officials because of the governors in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and also because the government offices closed. They are concern with public safety so they issued restrictions on nonessential travel. For example Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy issued a statewide travel ban beginning at 9 p.m. Monday when the storm is expected to be at its heaviest. ReplyDeleteWith one of the biggest snowstorm in New York history the government is having a hard time keeping up with the work load of not only keeping people safe but making sure the power outage stays at a minimum without putting their workers in jeopardy. Due to the heavy storm states are losing money dozens of flights coming in or going out have been cancealed, but also the trains and any non emergency vechicle have been banned till further notice coasting the government money. Like I stated earlier power companies are working four times as hard in harsh conditions trying to make sure there's power running through people's homes so they dont freezed to death in their own homes( a corner probably) to make it worst the power companies are fight about 4 inches of snow with heavy winds at the same time. But this was an economic challenge all over the nation because the winter storms caused many flights to be cancelled, and it cause many students to miss school and adults to miss work. Which can cause many industries to lose money. This is a problem in Florida because many people vacation here and they weren't able to get back home due to the flight cancellations. If travel is banned then important people can' get to where they need to be and meetings aren't met and appointments cant be kept. But, most importantly, the government has to protect and set precautions for citizens, hence the reason for the ban. This is also bad for Florida because Florida's main source of income is from tourism and if flights are being cancelled in the northeast, people from there aren't coming to Florida to spend their money. Of course it is very difficult for a meteorologist to predict snow because it can travel and snow at any time. Now, the issue with government officials is the fact that they had to shit down all offices. Governors implemented bans on motorcyclists and traveling on the roads. In New York City, the subways were on restriction and limited services. This is a problem for Florida because numerous amounts of flights were cancelled due to this terrible snowstorm. Under those conditions it was not safe to travel. Florida was mostly affected by this blizzard out of any other state because many northerners come down here to vacation. This signifies a great loss of tourism, causing the economy to decline. The snowstorm was predicted to come with strong, powerful winds, which could cause the power lines to get damaged. Repairing a power line during a blizzard is pretty tough especially when you're not allowed to leave your house. Without power around, power companies would lose profit, causing the economy to decline.

ReplyDeleteBenjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, was devised a speech by House Speaker John Boehner and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer. The speech was made for Netanyahu to speak out to Congress about the dangers of the proposed Iranian deal. Although Netanyahu and President Obama have had negotiations in the past, Netanyahu is now being denied a meeting with the president. President Obama seems to be unsupportive towards Netanyahu's efforts. He has not pushed for any of the members of the Democratic Party to attend the speech, "We defer to Democratic members if they’d like to attend or not,” a White House aide said Tuesday. A few members of Congress have stated that their seats will remain empty for the speech. Our Vice President, Joe Biden, has not committed to attending the speech. Benjamin Netanyahu's speech is scheduled to be a week before his reelection and he is hoping it will help his campaign. If the democrats do end up boycotting this speech, it will likely cause friction between America and Israel.
