Tax-Hating States Totally Fine with Taxing the Poor

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/18/sales-taxes-highest-in-st_n_4988216.html. DUE 31 March 2014. Where are the "tax-hating" states located? Why is sales tax actually a tax on the poor? Why do you think Florida has such a high sales tax rate? What are some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor?

  1. The "tax-hating'' states are located mostly in the South. The irony is they are the ones with the highest sales tax rates. A sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they have to pay it regardless of the fact that they are less fortunate. The cost of food, clothing and other purchased goods tend to make up a higher percentage of a low income consumer's budget than for people with higher incomes. The poor are also less likely to own property, and thus less likely to benefit from lower tax rates for homes and land. I think that the reason why Florida has such a high sales tax rate is maybe because of all the immigration. The state is overpopulated and the middle class is also increasing. Some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor would be taxes on things that aren't necessary to life and maybe the poor's federal income tax withdrew from their paycheck wouldn't be so high, depends on how much they make.

  2. The "tax-hating" states are mostly located on the South. The region also has a history of handing out huge tax breaks to large manufactures in order to persuade them to move there. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because the poor are less likely to own property, and thus less likely to benefit from lower tax rates for homes and land. I think Florida has such a high sales tax rate because the cost of food, clothing and other purchased goods tend to make up a higher percentage of a low income consumer's budget than for people with higher incomes. Some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor is that if they would only take out a little bit of taxes on the poor's paychecks or groceries and more taxes on the rich's people. I also think it would be less of a burden on the poor if more taxes are taking out on rich people's income tax, and less on the poor people.

  3. The "tax-hating" states are mostly located in the South. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they have to pay no matter what even if they dont make as much as the others. They are also less likely to own property and as stated in the article if they own less property then they benefit less from lower tax rates. I believe that Florida has such a high sales tax rate because our daily necessities like food, clothes, and certain products make up more of a lower income persons budget compared to that of a higher income persons budget. Some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor is taking out a minimal amount of tax from the paychecks of lower income people and taking out more taxes from higher income peoples paychecks. They could also take less from their overall federal income tax because they make less than the higher income people. Moreover, I believe that the government should be more lenient with the poor considering how much they make to people with better off lives.

  4. The "tax-hating" states are mostly located in the South. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they are required to pay it. In the article it also states "The poor are also less likely to own property, and thus less likely to benefit from lower tax rates for homes and land." I think Florida has such a high sales tax rate because the state of Florida's economy is driven by tourism by charging a higher tax rate, government projects can be funded by domestic and international tourist. This also allows Florida to not have a state income tax. Some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor is payroll tax, maybe not taking as much out of their paychecks could help. Giving them more money to spend on the things they need. Trying to help them in any way we can would be less burden on the poor because at this point they can use any help they can get.

  5. The "tax-hating" states are mostly located in the southern part of the United States. Sales tax is a taxation on the poor because no matter how much they make, they are required to pay it. To me, I feel that Florida has a high sales tax rate because of the amount of tourism that we have. We need to be able to not only have enough necessities for living for our residents but for all of the tourists who come to visit. The taxation allows for us to be financially stable. Some alternate taxes that would not be so hard on the poor would be on their paychecks. The poor would not see the money to begin with and it would only be a little at a time. This would be the simplest way of taxation.

  6. The tax-hating states are in the South, The Sales tax on the poor is because no matter how much money they make they still have to pay it they is no getting out of it. I think Florida has a high sales tax because the we are still a part of the south and also we have a lot of tourism that is in this state so that right there makes things more expensive so that the state can make more money. An alternative to help the poor would be to put more taxation on the rich people so the poor have more money to spend and put money in the economy.

  7. The “tax-hating” states are located in the southern region of the United States. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they have to pay it regardless of how little they make. I think that Florida has a high sales tax rate because of the amount of money made through sales on items bought by tourists. Tourists will buy anything even at a high price and a high sales tax rate because they enjoy souvenirs. Some alternate taxes would be a payroll tax. The poor would not have to pay it; a small amount would be taken from their paychecks, so they wouldn’t feel that they were being taxed a huge amount.

The sales tax is a taxation on the poor because how much they make, whether its a lot or a small amount, they are required to pay it. Florida has a high sales tax rate because of the tourism, everything just seems to be more expensive. Florida has to have enough necessities for the living residents and the tourists who come to visit. The taxation allows the state to be financially stable. Some alternate taxes that would be a relief on the poor is taking out the minimal amount of tax from the lower income paychecks of people and taking larger percent of taxes from higher income people. The federal income tax should be the same way as well. The poor has to pay large percentages of taxes with such a small income, barely to sustain the family they have. Paying a smaller percentage of taxes will be better for the poor.

  9. According to the article, the "tax-hating" states are located in the southern regions of the United States. The sales tax are actually a tax on the poor since they are most likely not to own any property, so the way these people are taxed are by their food and clothing. It's also due to the amount of money the make, they are still required to pay. Florida has such a high sales tax rate because that's where we make the many, with all of our clothing stores, our tourism traps, like Disney world, Universal, and the rest of those places. Some of the alternate taxes that would be less of a burden upon the poor would be payroll tax.

  10. The "tax-hating" states are mostly located on the South.  Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they have to pay no matter what even if they don't make as much as the others. Florida has a higher demand in necessities and many people spend their entire income on only necessities which makes the tax rate much higher. In the article it also states "The poor are also less likely to own property, and thus less likely to benefit from lower tax rates for homes and land." An alternate tax that would be less of a burden on the poor is payroll tax. Taking less out of their paychecks will help the poor with being able to have more room for discretionary income. Many people have money to only live, not to enjoy life. Also taking less out can help with bills and expenses.

  11. The “tax hating” states, according to the article, are located generally in the South. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because there is no difference whether they make as much money as others; the poor will always have to pay. The poor are also less likely to own as much property or as expensive property as the rich, meaning they don’t even benefit from lower tax rates. Personally, I think Florida has such a high sales tax because the state makes it money from tourist attractions. We have many famous destinations filled with countless of attractions that lure people from all over. Everything is more expensive in Florida’s attractions, meaning putting a higher sales tax. Some alternative taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor would be taking a higher federal income tax from the rich than the poor. They make more money, why should the less fortunate suffer.

  12. Most of the tax-hating states are located in the South. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because it costs a larger percentage of the income the poor receive than the percentage of the income the rich receive. Florida has such a high tax rate because Florida has given many tax breaks that decrease the state's revenue. Those tax breaks make Florida look more appealing and invites more people to live in Florida, but in order to make up for lost revenue, Florida has to get it from other sources. One of those sources is from the sales tax rate. An alternate tax that would be less of a burden on the poor would be a payroll tax. Less tax cuts for corporations would also help level the field.

  13. The tax-hating states are in the south of the United States. The reason why the sales tax is on the poor is because do not own property. so because they do not, they can not benefit from lower tax rates for home and land. they have to pay it and can not escape from it. Florida has a high sales tax because it is a tourist attraction, so its economy depended on the tourists contributions.By charging a higher tax rate, government projects can be funded by domestic and international tourist. This also eliminates Florida's state income tax. Some alternate taxes that would be less of a burden on the poor is payroll tax, maybe not taking as much out of their paychecks could help. They should be given more money to spend on their need. We should help any way we can would to ease the burden on the poor because at this point they can use any help they can get.

  14. The tax-hating states are located in the Southern part of the USA. Sales tax is a tax on the poor because they have to pay it even if they don't get paid much because it's the largest part of their tax. I believe that Florida has a high sales tax rate because of the amount of money that is collected from the year round travelers that visit and the amount of stuff that they buy, which is usually high and overpriced and the money funds a lot of state things which takes place the income tax. Some taxes that would be less of a burden on poor people would be the payroll tax should be decreased because that gives them more money to spend and also maybe tax those who are richer to takes its place.

  17. The "tax-hating'' states are mainly located within the Southern part of the United States. Sales tax is actually a tax on the poor because they have to pay regardless the circumstances, even if they don't accumulate as much as others do. They are also less likely to own property, hence, less likely to benefit from lower tax rates for homes and land. Florida has such a high sales tax rate because Florida's economy thrives on tourism by charging a higher tax rate. Government projects can be funded by domestic and international tourist. A payroll tax would be an effective way to lessen the burden on the poor. Taking less out of their paychecks could help. Leaving them with more spending money. Or heavier taxation on the rich.

  20. The "tax hating" states are located primarily in the south. Southern states are notoriously known for hating taxes and therefore this causes sales tax to increase to compensate for lack of government revenue. However sales tax is regressive which means it mainly does harm to poorer people because it is a fixed amount of money being taking away on each dollar to everyone regardless of wealth. Alternative taxes to benefit the poor (rather than sales tax) would be property and income tax. These taxes are percentages based on wealth for the most part making them more fair.

  21. Majority of the tax-hating states are in the south. Sales tax is considered a tax on the poor because it hurts poorer people more than the richer. The fixed rate of tax on each dollar hurts the poorer people more than the richer people because they have less dollars to spend. Florida has such a high tax rate because the state needs more revenue to pay for things like roads and schools. Some alternate taxes would be income taxes. Since their income is lower, it wouldn't hurt them as much.

  23. The southern states are the "tax-hating states." Sales tax is a tax on the poor because the lower your income, the higher the percentage of your income it takes. Florida has a high tax rate because we rely a lot on tourism. Thats it. Plus, there is a luxury tax on certain things. A payroll tax wouldnt effect the poor very much. It is automatically deducted from the paycheck, so the unemployed wouldnt be effected.

  24. Tax-hating states are located in the South. According to the article sales tax is the biggest part of lower income families' budgets due to lower house and property taxes. The poor also heavily rely on sales tax items than the rest of the classes. Florida has such a high sales tax rate because I feel that being apart of the Southern atmosphere we are influenced by the South's decision in not raising property taxes thus having such a high sales tax. The alternate taxes that would be less of a burden for the poor are property tax, and more progressive taxes on the upper class due to their income and ability to afford such costs.

  25. The majority of the tax-hating states are located in the south. The southern states have the highest sales tax rates. The article said that the southern states uses tax breaks to encouraged manufacturers to relocated in their state.. The article explains that the southern states only have high sales tax because the other taxes don't take a greater portion of a poor persons income. Southern citizens like us floridans get mini tax breaks because of our sales tax but since Florida is based on tourism our rates are a little lower. Sales taxes are the biggest burden on the poor when they don't directly own property. Gift taxes and property taxes usually are on the wealthy.
