Just How Dangerous is a Giant Comcast?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/19/comcast-time-warner-deal_n_4816651.html DUE 3 March 2014. What is the rationale for the government breaking up monopolies? Will Comcast become a monopoly if the merger is allowed to go through? What is predicted to happen to prices if the merger goes through? What will happen to service if the merger goes through? In your view, should the government allow this merger?

  1. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to make money, of course. I think Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger is allowed to go through. Prices are predicted to go higher if the merger goes through. Because a lot of people will be subscribing to Comcast, the service would be slow if the merger goes through. According to the article, it says: ''In some of the markets in which it operates, Comcast is the only entity that offers cable and broadband service, to the great frustration of many customers who say this veritable monopoly starves them of choice, and leads to higher prices". In my view, the government should not allow this merger.

  2. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is because competition is essential to protect the public good. They don't want the companies to have to much control of the market. I believe Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger allow it to go through. It is predicted that if the merger goes through prices will go up. Stated in the article "We're certainly not promising that customer bills are going to go down or even increase less rapidly." The service will become not as efficient or as fast if the merger goes through because so many people will be subscribing to it. I don't think the government should allow this merger. Mostly because other issues will stem off this merger.

  3. The whole point of breaking up the monopolies is clearly to make money, but while they break them up, more and more new companies will become monopolies. For example, Comcast most likely will become a monopoly because they are already a big company today and it wouldn't be that hard for them to become into a monopoly. If the merger does go through it is predicted that the Comcast stations will be extremely slow because an enormous amount of people will be on the Comcast server at once. In my opinion there is a upside and a downside to this, the government can either approve it and make it a monopoly and get money but, on the other side the servers will be bad and many people may stop or get rid or Comcast.

  4. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to make sure each company has an equal playing field. In my opinion, if the merger goes through, I believe that Comcast will become a monopoly. The reason is that Comcast is already a large company and so for them to take over Time Warner, a much smaller yet still powerful company, will allow for Comcast to control more viewers. With this merger, there is no telling what the prices will do. Also, if the merger goes through the service will be slower due to so many people having Comcast as their service provider. I do not believe that this merger should be passed; allowing for a company to have too much power is never good.

  5. The reason why the gov't is breaking up monopolies is because they don't want them to have too much control of the market. For example, The Standard Oil is one of the biggest company in the world, and it came to control 90% of US oil production and this led to a higher gas prices and less oil, harming the overall market. The size of the company did not matter. It was the way they wielded it and that was the problem.
I believe that Comcast will become a monopoly because this company is already big and them taking over Time Warner will allow Comcast to control more viewers. I don't know if they will raise their prices because they already charged 156$ per month for viewers. However, if the prices get too high, it will probably lead to what happened to Standard Oil. I don't think the this merger should be passed because then Comcast will have too much power

  6. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to make money and eventually more companies become monopolies. I believe that Comcast will also become a monopoly if the merger goes through because it is already a big company and can more effectively become a monopoly without much effort. If the merger does go through it is predicted that the prices will go up but it is a definite fact. Also the service will go slow due to the fact that mainly people will be on it at the same time which slows down its system. I do not think the government should allow for the merger to go through because if it does become a monopoly it will hold too much power and many people will be using it at the same time.

  7. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to make sure each company has an equal chance. If the merger was to be approved and go through Comcast will become a monopoly. Comcast is already the only company in some places that provide cable. As stated in the article, ''In some of the markets in which it operates, Comcast is the only entity that offers cable and broadband service, to the great frustration of many customers who say this veritable monopoly starves them of choice, and leads to higher prices". Comcast would probably price their service to their advantage since Comcast would be the customers only choice. If the merger went through the service would probably not be as effective, because many people would be using it. In my opinion the merger shouldn't be approved because monopolies became illegal for a reason. There's is no equal chance in the market with monopolies. The servers, quality, and prices will be affected negatively.

  8. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is because it ruins competition in the market. If the merger is allowed to go through, then Comcast would dominate its market, making it a monopoly. The company would starve its customers of choice and it would lead to higher prices. Not only that, but Comcast would become a larger network in general that would have a larger span of customers. Most competitors won't be able to afford all the services because Comcast would be buying them for a ridiculous price which could put all other competitors out of the market. I think the merger shouldn't be approved because other companies would be destroyed or almost non-existent.

  9. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is because they want fair competition, equaling out the playing field if you will. If the merger is allowed to go through, Comcast will definitely turn into a monopoly. Once the merger goes through, it's predicted that while the prices go up, the service will go down. They will most likely be less efficient, and less caring since they will be a big company. In my point of view, this kind of merger should not take place, especially from a personal view point, Comcast isn't a very good cable company.

  10. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is due to the thought all profit going into one company, which will increase the power they hold on society. The do not want one company to have as much power over another, they must level out the market so to speak. Yes Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger was to go through. In the article one can see the amount of success that they have already accumulated through their online streaming, with an expansion they would own the entire online streaming market. The predicted price increase if the merger was to go through would be higher than their $156 per month fee for customers as of now. The outcome of service if this goes through will be that we will be paying an extreme unreasonable amount of money to Comcast for basic television and we cannot do anything about it. The government should not allow this merger because of the price increase all of us are going to face when all there is to offer is Comcast services.

  12. The rationale for breaking up monopolies is because the more control they have over the market, the more power that company will have. If this merger goes through, Comcast will become a monopoly. If the merger goes through, prices will increase. Especially on streaming companies, like Netflix or Amazon. Service prices will also increase and people looking to get their show shown through these companies couldn't afford to not do business with such a powerful company. In my opinion the government should not allow this merger to go through because if it does the majority of the people will suffer because of the price increases.

  15. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is so that there is fair competition. I believe that comcast will become a monopoly if this merger is allowed to go though. It is predicted that the prices will rise if this merger goes through. I believe that if this merger goes through prices are going to increase and the service is going to be worse then usual which is going to leave a ton of people unhappy. The thing thats bad though is they wont really have much of a choice because internet is very important in our society. I dont think that this merger should occur even though if it did comcast would be the company i prefer itd be. I dont know why, i just like comcast much better then any other cable company. all in all though, it shouldnt happen because it is unfair to other people

  16. The breaking down of monopolies is that every company in that industry has an equal chance to make it and become successful. Comcast is already the largest cable company so going with the merger will make it bigger which will make it harder for other companies to compete with Comcast. With the merger the prices might raise and people will pay it because their will be no other option for cable than making Comcast a monopoly .

  17. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to stop one company such as comcast from taking over the market and getting too much power. If the merger does in fact go through, then they will be a virtual monopoly who controls almost all of the market. This will allow Comcast to raise prices to what ever they want because they are the only provider of services, so prices will increase. Furthermore, every company will have to conduct service with Comcast so that they can survive in the market. In my opinion, the government shouldn't allow the merger because Comcast will gain too much control over the market creating a monopoly much like Standard Oil before the Sherman Anti Trust Act.

  18. The reason why thhe government breaks up monopolies is so the market as fair and that no one business has too much control. If the merger goes through, i think comcast will be a monopoly. also, this would raise prices.service would be slow becausse there would be too many people using one company.the government should not allow this merger. it would mess up too many things and i, personally, would not enjoy being forced to use comcast.

  20. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is to prevent from one company have to much power, and ruining the market competitions. If Comcast is allowed to have its merge come through, then it will be most likely to become a monopoly. What I predict what the prices would look like if the merger goes through, it will have extremely high prices and limited choices in in the companies offers. Usually, with big companies the services will be slow and have issues. Comcast will cover the majority of the nation, and will have an overload which will result in issues all around. For this, I don't think the government should allow the merge to come through.

  21. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is because it has become too powerful. I think that if the merger is allowed to go through, Comcast will become a monopoly. I think if the merger goes through, the prices will increase. I also think that if the merger goes through, in terms of service, I think it would go slower because every program would have to start all over again. The company is already charging $156 per month per customer last year, and cable companies consistently rank at the bottom of customer satisfaction surveys. In my view, the government should not allow this merger because the company will be too powerful and people will be paying unfair prices for Comcast services.

  22. The rationale for the government breaking up is to limit the amount of power every company has.Yes, I have a feeling Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger is allowed. I think that prices will raise, and the service will lag, considering a lot of more people will be subscribing. Comcast is already a very large cable company. In my perspective, I don't believe the merger should go through I feel like Comcast will gain too much power and wipe out other companies.

  24. the rational for the government breaking monopolies is to ensure that every company has equal chances. Comcast is on its way to becoming a monopoly if this merger is allowed. The merger will cause less compition and Comcast will control the market. Due to that fact that there will be less competitors Comcast will raise their prices high and no one will be able to do anything about it. In my opinion the merger shouldn't happen, they will get to powerful and the customers will get screwed over and will get taken advantage off.

  25. The purpose for government breaking down monopolies is to preserve market competition. If a company becomes too big and holds a large chunk of the market it allows them to control the market and eventually drive out their competition. The government does not the companies to have too much control over the market. I believe Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger is allowed to go through. The service will become not as efficient or as fast if the merger goes through because so many people will be subscribing to it. The quality of service will also go down because a plethora of people will be on the Comcast servers that it will strain their capabilities. I do not believe that the merger should be allowed to proceed because it will create a big monopoly that will take advantage of customers and provide bad quality service.

  27. The rationale for the government breaking up monopolies is because all of the money will be made by only one company, which means they have all the power of that product/service and they control society because you can't get it anywhere else. The gov. does not want one company to have more power than another, because of this. Comcast will become a monopoly if the merger happens and the predicted price increase is around $156 per month fee for customers. Which is insane but everyone will have to pay because you can't get the service anywhere else.

  28. The government has no choice but to break up any companies looking to be a monopoly in order to protect the public. The control that Comcast would have after this merger is huge and they can pretty much make any price that they want. I don't believe a merge should be able to go through or else people will be paying for cable with an arm & leg. Prices looking around $200 if they want.

  29. Monopolies simply pose the simply threat of having to much power. If there is a monopoly government would either need to use heavey regualation making the company into a government program rather than an independent company. Breaking up the monopoly would be the best option to avoid giving the government power over a company because of it's power. Hopefully comcast just avoids making the merger itself rather than government having to split it up. At any rate it could end up being split up anyways if the other company went belly up. The price would definitely go up. Hard to say how specifically it will go up but it will go up. The service will either be better at a higher price or the same with a higher price. There could also be the option of it going up and service quality going down. Honestly the government should tell comcast plane and simply that if they merge they will break up the whole company if they don't merge then they better help the competition stay relavent.

  30. The reason the government breaks up monopolies is because a monopoly creates an unfair competition. Yes if Comcast merges it will be a monopoly. It is already large, a merger would make them even bigger. Prices are predicted to go up with the merger. The government should not allow this merger.

  31. Monopolies are outlawed to protect the public good. Imagine a corporation who gains so much power they can price their service/product whatever they want to. I think Comcast is already a monopoly and purchasing Time Warner is making their case worst. Their prices will go up and their service will continue to suck. I believe the government should smack down on Comcast and not allow this aquisition.
