Billionaires Received Millions From Taxpayer Farm Subsidies: Analysis

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/07/farm-subsidies-billionaires_n_4232739.html Due 18 November 2013 at 6am. Why do billionaires get into the farming business? Do they really NEED the subsidies? If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, what will happen to the food supply?? WHY?? (look at the supply curve and discuss incentives--also consider weather)

39 comments:

  1. Billionaires get into the farming business for the SUBSIDIES. No they do not need the subsidies like the remaining two percent of struggling farmers throughout the United States, but they rather make a profit then dispersing those funds to the citizens who need it desperately. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers all of our food supply will struggle or fluctuate. As mentioned in class farming is a risky business, you can either make a real chunk of change or plummet like there is no tomorrow. Our taxpayer dollars contribute in providing subsidies to the crops that are the most costly during certain times, if we disallow subsidies and a certain crop fails to “revive” itself due to our lack of funding it then the supply curve of that crop will move to the left. Also for farmers there are no incentives to farm if there are no subsidies. Farmers use subsidies for their crops just like Americans use their Christmas bonus around the holidays, so farmers may just reduce the amount of crops to farm just for security reasons on no funding if things were to happen. The food supply may also alter depending on the weather. Mother Nature is unpredictable in the farming industry; there are droughts that can kill the supply as well as floods that can also ruin crops. Subsidies help struggling farmers replenish their supply instead of everything coming out of the farmer’s pocket. Overall if subsidies were to be rejected to farmers the food supply will take a huge toll. Billionaires have found another way to feed into their wealth, while the remain classes in America are suffering from their greed.

  2. According to the article recently congress altered the country's farm bill, cutting billions from thye food stamp proram over the next decade. Now that same bill is providing millions in farm subsidies to billionaires businesses. From that little fact it is obvious that billionaires get into the farming business for the SUBSIDIES. No they do not neeed the subsidies like the Forty seven million Americans that are already reeling from cuts to the food stamps program just a few days ago; according to research. Unfortunately, if we dissalow subsidies to all farmers , the food supply would struggled. For farmers if there are no subsidies , these no incentives in staying in the farming business. We all know that the weather is a big part of farming weather it is an advantage or not. In total, U.S taxpayers provided $11 .3 million in subsidies to businesses with ties to the the 50 billionaires, but farmers use the subsidies for their crops, so if there to cut the subsidies as a result farmers would be the most affected; because billionaires doesn't need the subsidies. "After all that's why they are called bilionaires."

  3. Billionaires get into the farm business because they know that if they enter them they can get large tax write offs, and other subsidies that put large amounts of money into their pockets. They gladly take subsidies even though they know that they do not need them, because they already have extremely high incomes. If disallow subsides to all farmers, both food supplies and they American economy would suffer greatly. Subsides help farmers, who actually need them, compensate for losses and acts as an incentive to continue to grow vital crops like corn. Without them many farmers would suffer because they would not have the money to buy the necessary things to grow and harvest their crops for a profit. If famers cannot grow food there would be a food shortage across America which could devastate an already fragile economy. It is essential the farmers get the help that they need, so that food can continue to make it to those who need it.

  4. In my opinion, billionaires get into the farming business because of their incentives and those incentives are most of the times ambitious ones. They just want to make more and more money than what they already have and for the subsidies. No they do not necessarily need the subsidies but if we disallow the subsidies to all farmers, the food supply would go down because the farmers would not have any incentives to keep farming. Society would suffer because we depend on the farmer's crops. So, we have no choice but to provide them those subsidies because otherwise they will stop farming and that would hurt us. According to the article: "The subsidies were first instituted to help family farms keep afloat when prices of certain crops got too low, but now smaller farms have largely been crowded out by larger farming corporations that control many levels of production."

  5. The billionaires in this case are full of greed that is why they are only going into the farming business for the subsidies not because they actually need it but to gain more as a profit. They also have an inability to realize that others need it more than they do.
They are solely getting involved into this risky business that can plummet so easily only to make a profit; therefore they do not need the subsidies, they only want it without caring about the others that actually need it. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers then the food supply will tremendously go downhill. All the crops that make up the supply that we hold are made through these subsidies and without them we have no crops and without crops there are no profits, resulting in no intention or incentives for investors/farmers to continue farming.
The weather is also an important factor for these farmers to consider. The reason agricultural is not held in places with cold climate is because farmers are well aware that their crops will not last. So agricultural is held in places with nutrient rich soil and climate where crops can successfully grow. Droughts are one thing that can affect the growth of crops which can occur because of mother nature. The plants need water in order to survive and without it they can easily die off. Therefore in order to keep the food supply together, farmers need their subsidies and for mother nature to be on their side so they can have successful outcomes.
In total, U.S taxpayers provided $11 .3 million in subsidies to businesses. Without subsidies these farmers wont be able to gain crops. In the article it says, "The subsidies were first instituted to help family farms keep afloat when prices of certain crops got too low, but now smaller farms have largely been crowded out by larger farming corporations that control many levels of production." Therefore it is very important for the farmers to receive their subsidies.

  6. According to the article, billionaires get into the farming business to get subsidies. The subsidies program was developed during the depression to boost struggling farmers, but now is largely used by wealthy farmers to subsidize growing risky crops. They don't really need the subsidies, all they want to do is make money. I also think that they rather be rich makes a lot of money, than let the poor people have subsidies like it should have been. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, I think the food supply would suffer, because without subsidies some farmers wouldn't have something to do or count on. I think subsidies should be give to the farmers, but there should be implementation that the subsidies should only be given to the needy farmers not the rich ones.

  7. It seem that Billionaires get into farm business because of the incentives.Farm businesses assure their stability at all costs. As other farmers, they receive subsidies, which is a guarantee for them, except that they don't even need it. This factor hurt the other two percent farmers that depend on farming fror survival. Acoording to the article,"The subsidies were first instituted to help family farms keep afloat when prices of certain crops got too low, but now smaller farms have largely been crowded out by larger farming corporations that control many levels of production." Its not fair that poor farmers, or farmers who farm for a living get to share their subsidies withh the wealthy farm owners who are in it for the riches. They don't even share the subsidies, the largest corporations benefit more anyway. So when the droughts, or any other natural disaster happens, ravaging the crops, farmers are really left at their own luck.
Despite all this problem the real farmers are facing, we can't disallow farm subsidies(although the big corporations would not be affected). If we do so, our economy and our nation will suffer greatly. Farming is a very risky business for farmers and substantial to the rest of the population/economy. If we disalow farming subsidies farmers will not take the risk to farm, we wont be producing anything, and pour economy will crash. We would have to import all our products from other nations and wouldn't be able to trade as much as we used to. Those farmers who take the risk to farm (if they do) will suffer in times of natural disaster, and so will we. For example if a drought kill most of the corns, these farmers willl be forced to raise the price of corn in order to make up for it. There would be a shortage of production and the people would have to subsitute for corn.

  8. Billionaires get into the farming business for the subsidies, they are able to get taxpayer money for their farming businesses. Billionaries don't need the subsidies, subsidies are designed to help people or groups that cant help themselves in the sense of supporting them. Billionaries have the ability to support themselves already why give them more money, if it could go to people who truly need it. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, the food supply will decrease because farmers farm for the subsidies. Prices will go up because the supply will go down and the demand will remain the same. People will still need food to eat and survive and farmers give us that ability. The supply most of our crops and disallowing this will just affect both farmers and us. Farmers can't control the weather, if there are drought or floods its all part of mother nature. This will affect our food production along with farmers. People will have to search for subsitutions to replace the crops.

  9. Billionaires buy into the farming business to collect subsidies . they don't need the subsidies but they do enjoy making money for doing nothing. If we don't give subsidies to farmers, they wont be able to keep up the farms and the food supply would go down. Less supply means price goes up. the supply would go down because with things like fluctuating weather and temperature there is no guarantee that their crops will be successful.

  10. Many billionaires become a part of these large farming business because of the incentives provided and many of these incentives are most of the times ambitious ones. The only thing these billionaires can think about is making more and more money than what they already have and for the subsidies. Although these farmers do not necessarily need the subsidies provided by the government, if we were to disallow the subsidies to all farmers, the food supply would go down because the farmers would not have any incentives to keep farming. Thus, society would suffer because we depend on the farmer's crops, and we obviously wouldn’t be able to survive without them. With that being said, we have no choice but to provide them those subsidies, if not then they will stop farming and that would hurt us. As stated in the article, "The subsidies were first instituted to help family farms keep afloat when prices of certain crops got too low, but now smaller farms have largely been crowded out by larger farming corporations that control many levels of production."

  11. Billionaires do not need subsidies at all and are just trying to find ways to pay lower taxes on the billions of dollars they have. The problem is if we take away the subsidies to all farmers then we would be hurting the real farmers that depend on subsidies for economic support. If we do disallow subsidies, farmers will lose a lot more money and won't be able to live in those conditions anymore especially when droughts and storms happen and their crops they use for income die. This will take away what ever fresh fruits and vegetables we have left in the country.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Billionaires get into the farming business because they know they will get things like subsidies that will only increase their income. Since they’re already billionaires, they aren’t the ones who need the subsidies; farmers with much less money are the ones who need it. If we disallow subsidies for all farmers, there will be fewer farmers since many of them may rely on the subsidies. This will cause our food supply to decrease, which will send prices up, while our demand will stay almost the same. Farmers supply most of our crops so if we have fewer farmers we will have fewer crops. Things like weather also affect crops. Destroyed crops from droughts or natural disasters combined with having much fewer farmers, will force us to find substitutes for crops.

  13. Subsidies is a financial assistance given by one person or government to another. Billionaires are involved in the farming businesses just for the subsidies. However, they don't need the subsidies. These are for people who are struggling, and having the billionaires take money is not right. Between 1995 - 2012, the U.S tax payers provided 11.3 million in subsidies to businesses with ties to the 50 billionaires.
Farmers having to share their subsidies with the wealthy is not fair. The farmers use their subsidies to save up just in case a drought comes. Once a drought comes, they will have enough money to restock on corns. But since they have to split their subsidies, they are living by chances. The greedy, wealthy classes are taking money from people who actually need it.
If we disallow the subsidies, the production of food will drastically decrease. Being in a farming industry is a risky business because you either do well or don't. There is no in between. There are a lot of factors that determines whether or not you will do well such as weather.
Without subsidies, farmers will have no incentives to want to farm. They use their extra cash on crops, and saving up like I mentioned earlier. It is used as an "emergency money" just in case a drought hits. If they do not have subsidies, their mindset will be "what is the point in farming if I won't get extra cash". They would want to quit their job as farmers, and then there will be a decrease in farmers, and productions.

  15. Billionaires get into the farming business in order to receive the subsidies that come along with farming. The subsidies should truly only be received by the average farmer who may be struggling, but there is no way to prevent billionaires from receiving the subsidies without harming struggling farmers who need the subsidies in order to operate. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, there is no incentives for farmers to continue to farm and it can create a shortage of farmers which will in turn create a shortage of food forcing us to turn to other countries for food. Many farmers crops die due to forces of nature and "acts of god" which are some of the reasons as to why subsidies are required to allow farmers to still make money with these losses. If they didn't receive these there would be know way for them to continue farming.

  16. Billionaires are getting into the farming business because the subsidies from farming will increase their profits. Billionaires do not really need these subsidies because their life doesn't depend on the profits they are getting from the crops unlike the farmers that need the subsidies to survive. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, our crop supply would suffer. We depend on farmer’s crops for eating and also for trading among different states as well as countries, and without the subsidies, the farmers have no incentive to even bother farming. This means that our supple would go down, while demand would increase significantly, and in return, prices would skyrocket. Crop supply relies on weather and there is never a 100 percent guarantee with being able to make a profit or crops.

  17. Billionaires go into the farm businesses so that they can receive subsidies. No I do not think that subsidies are necessary because it is not even helping the people that need to receive the crops, people are just using it for their greedy benefits. The food supply will decrease because they will not receive subsidies. The weather also could alter the food supply. For example, if a drought or hurricane does hit, it could wipe out the crops and lower the supply of food for the consumers. Then, subsidies are probably necessary.

  18. Billionaires get into farming for one reason and one reason only, subsidies. In our economy, 2% of our people are struggling farmers who depend on their subsidies to make it through the day. Billionaires are the last people to ever need subsidies. They would rather make more money than giving it away to people who desperately need it. Disallowing subsidies to ALL farmers will decrease our food supply greatly. Farmers are the reason we have great meals at Thanksgiving. Our food supply will be tainted and severe health problems may occur. Our daily groceries will be scarce and expensive. Also, without subsidies there is absolutely no reason for a farmer to farm. Without farming, there would be less crops to obtain. Subsidies act as a bonus to farmers, and without them farmers will have to pay out of their own pockey to plant just a few crops. At the end of the day, farmers need their subsidies to feed their own families and the rest of America each and every day. Billionaires have enough money to feed their own families for years to come and obtaining subsidies just reveals how greedy and selfish one can be.

  19. Billionaires get into the farming industry because they want to make more money, cause who doesn't want to make more money. enough is never enough, many families rely on food stamp to help feed they families and many of there families are on food stamps for a reason, it is like being poor then losing 10 dollars now your poorer then before just like these billionaires they were already rich now with these subsides are now richer. The poor keep getting poorer while the rich keep getting richer.

  20. Billionaires today go into farming for the subsidies that are in it.They find it as a way to make more money than the billions they already have. In our economy today the 2% of farmers rely on these subsidies to finance themselves. Billionaires would rather collect more money than give it out to people who need it. even though they truly don't need these subsidies. ruling to not give farmers subsidies would greatly affect food supply greatly as it is now. Farmers play large impact in the united states, and without them would be a severe food shortage and only few who can afford food, would survive. As well the fact if there are no subsidies theirs no real reason to be a farmer, due to fact it would be too much for them to pay out of pocket to farm. Subsidies are needed to sustain the 2% farmers in the united sates and as well help maintain us population as well. Because without food, people starve to death. The fact that these billionaires go into farming just for subsidies show how heartless and money hungry people can be. Even though they don't need it because they already have large amount of money to carry them and future generations through life.

  21. Yes I do believe billionaires do get into farming for the subsidies, its like a little bit extra money that they don't already have. I do think that it isn't a good thing because millionaires already have millions of dollars and the real 2% of farmers are struggling and need to rely on subsidies to pay everything they need to pay off and provide their families with what they need. If the "real" farmers don't receive the subsidies that they need then their will be a food shortage in our economy. The reason is because that the farmers aren't getting paid their subsidies they wont raise any crops anymore that get sold at markets near us, which wont provide all of us with the fruits or vegetables that we need. The millionaires don't need the money from subsidies, they are just taking money away from the farmers, they should be taxed way more then the lower class or the medium class.

  22. It baffles me how these so called billionaires are allowed t rule over the working man, and how nothing is being done about it.Billionaires get into the farming business because they know they will get things like subsidies that will only increase their income and that is just so sick and maniacal. I cant believe that they have the audacity to even do things like this.but there is no way to prevent billionaires from receiving the subsidies without harming struggling farmers who need the subsidies in order to operate. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, there is no incentives for farmers to continue to farming which will just defeat the purpose of being a farmer. You cant fight fire with fire. I think the IRS need to stop going after normal people and go after theses fat cats and take them down

  23. At first, billionaires got into the farming business to help small farming families stay afloat when prices of the crops were too low. Now they get into these businesses for the subsidies that are being received that would surely raise their incomes. If we decided to disallow subsidies to all farmers at one point, then we would be in for a world of hurt. Prices would sharply rise, and our food supply would greatly decrease. Not to mention, the food would probably no longer be of good use to us if farmers do not have money to maintain these crops. Without subsidies, farmers would surely stop farming since their main income has disappeared. Not only that, but farming is a risky business to begin with. There's the grade of the crop, the risk of having drought and having to spend money on irrigation, or trying to make up for the loss of crops due to weather changes.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Those billionaires that get into the farming industry are doing it to of course just make money, and also to receive subsidies. I don't think that subsidies are necessary because its helping those people that actually need to receive the crops, the people getting the subsidies are being greedy. The poor are getting poorer, the rich are getting richer, while the middle class is disappearing. But if we don't allow the subsidies then we won't be getting the proper crop supply, they'll lose the incentives. They won't have incentive then won't see a point in farming. If the farmers don't grow crops there will be a shortage in crops and people could starve. The supply will go down tremendously while the demand goes up. Farmers can't control the weather, anything that is weather related is no one's fault but mother nature. This will affect our food production along with farmers. People will have to search for subsitutions to replace the crops. It's not fair that because of the weather we're suffering.

  25. Billionaires only get involved into the farming business because they receive subsidies. which in my perspective they shouldn't get. If they're Billionaires why would they need the extra money, to store it away ? no. If we do disallow subsidies then the farmers doing the farming would start throwing hissy fits, if bad weather starts to happen then the crops would get lost, and farmers wouldnt have money to pay or fix the crops. less crops means higher prices

  26. The billionaires get into the farming business because of the subsidies. These are Billionaires, they do not need to get these subsidies, they were created for the small family farm businesses. According to the article, it is just extra money that the billionaires do not need. They are taking advantage of something that was created to help the small businesses afloat during the low crop prices. Now, those small businesses are being crowded out due to the billionaires. We cant cut out the subsidies to all the farmers, because there are real hard working families that do this as a living to supply for themselves and others. If they are do well during a season, maybe the next one it wont be as great. Farming is risky, and therefore the subsidies were created with good intension to help those in the bad times. Our taxes help the farmers in any kind of emergency whether its is a drought or any other natural disaster. It has something for them to fall back on.

If we disallow subsidies to farmers the food supply would decrease. if a drought was to happen or something else may occur that ruin the crops it would lower food supply for us. Therefore we can't disallow subsidies because we depend on the farmers crop to produce food for us that we need.

  28. There is a simple solution, we need to know who can and cannot recieve subsidies. These are meant to keep farmers farming. It wasn't made to put extra money into the pockets of billionaires. This is what happens when there are set rules. Unless retriction and rules are air tight and loop holes can't be found then people will find a way to benefit from it. I mean there are people who live off the government and others claiming disability. This isn't good either on a smaller scale. I only wonder though will billionaires interest be benficial to us maybe getting cheaper food. I mean if they start farming and increase the amount of raw food made in the country would it decrease the price. If this were true then maybe families could afford healthier food. This is a small side thought though the chances of it being a real factor maybe slim to none. If it were true though the money they are recieving is an incentive for them to produce more food which is a basic need of life. All in all, the money they are recieving is an incentive. If we were able to manipulate this incentive to where they wouldn't recieve as much money but would take up farming we may find the solution to cheaper and healtier food.

  30. It is evident that billionaires get into the farming business for subsidies. It is a rather selfish decision of them however not a foolish one. Creating your own farm gives rise to opportunities that are able to expand wealth. U.S. taxpayers provided farmers with 11.3 million dollars in subsidies, over the course of seventeen years. Not only do farmers get subsidies from U.S. taxpayers but they are also able to receive unlimited crop insurance subsidies. Of course, these billionaires do not need the subsidies unlike all the other farmers who are actually dependent on the food they grow to get by. They are simply looking to fulfill their own greedy desires. If we disallow subsidies to all farmers, our food supply will diminish. Many actual farmers are dependent on these subsidies and without them they cannot continue to produce. If subsidies are removed then crop insurance subsidies will as well be removed. Weather is an important contributor; in a case where a crop is destroyed by a natural disaster farmers will have no money to be able to restore their crops.

  32. In the beginning, billionaires became farmers or were part of the farming business to help one another, now its all for the money. According to the article, billionaires are just getting extra money they do not need. Just for the subsidies. The billionaires prove to all how selfish and greedy people can be in the world. They just take advantage of the opportunities given to help the small businesses , for their own wealth. And they do this because they know that without food people will starve to death. If we were able to control the incentive, there would be cheaper and healthier food for everyone to eat and share.

  33. Well, let me start with this. Do you want to go into walmart and see that all of your favorite veggies and fruits gone due to restricted subsides? Yea, I didn't think so. So, unfortunately the likelihood of constricting a farm subsidy is unlikely. Of course, it sucks that we cannot control something like these subsides but think like a billionaire who is in the farming business. If you want to make money don't you need to find ways to do it? Do not think like a person who wants to help everyone, think like a person who wants to be successful. What do you owe someone? Nothing… Of course I would find some type of way to help in some way but, only to a certain extent. Not to be completely greedy but not giving it away in a sense. This subject is kind of hard to explain because it divides the human element vs the aspect of complete greed for money.

  34. Billionaires are getting into the farming business for subsidies. I don't not believe that subsidies are necessary because the billionaires are doing it for there own self gain. Although these farmers do not need subsidies from government. If we disallow them the food supply would decries because the there would be no incentive for the farmers to continue farming.

  35. Billionaires get into the farming business because of all the government subsidies given to farmers. Personally, I do not think that they need these subsidies. Billionaires who are already rich enough are able to get paxtayer money to continue their farming business when they clearly do not need it. However, if we disallow subsidies to farmers the food supply will diminish and this will cause all the small businesses and farms to go bankrupt. Without the government's help most of the small farms would not be able to continue growing their crop. Also, without the money from the government if the weather is poor that year, those small farmers would not be able to regrow their crops and be able to survive.

  36. Billionaires get into the farming business simply because the risk comes with insurance. Farmers put pretty much all of their money into their farmers & if the crop is sold at too low of a price, the government provides subsidizes. Now that is really great for small family farms but for billionaire farming corporations that may also be part of an conglomerate, a subsidy may be unnecessary. Those companies won't go belly up for one crop season. While they're getting subsidized, poor families are losing the support of food stamps because of it. However we can't really take the subsidies away from farmer because it'll destroy our food supply. With only 2% of the country being farmers, we need them to be protected. Billionaires take advantage of the government protection. The rich keeps on getting richer.

  37. The only reason that these wealthy individuals are getting into farming is to make a profit of of the government subsidizing there ventures. These individuals defiantly do not need these payments from the government. It would be impossible for the government to stop subsidizing farmers because unlike many that are purely trying to cheat the government there are real farmers that really on the help to keep up and running. The real issue is with the rich taking advantage of the system. The government needs to star considering who the are helping, and truly evaluate who is honest, and who is in it to cheat

  38. Billionairs but into farming to collect subsidies. They don't need them by still buy into them just for the fun of it and because they love money. On the other hand without the billionaires buying into subsidies they food supply would go down because they take care of the farms and when the supply of food go down the price for it will go up. Since weather can't be controlled that also can play into the fact that it's not decided if crops with thrive in situations which can also make the the supply go down and prices go up.

  39. Billionaires are only getting involved in farming for the subsidies. In many cases, they do not need the subsidies, unlike other farmers who risk their finances for farming. If we are to discontinue subsidies on farming, our food supply would shrink noticeably. On a supply and demand graph, the supply curve would shift to the left because without the subsidies coming in from the government, a farmer has no way of knowing whether or not a storm, flood, or drought will arrive to destroy their crop. Where is the incentive then for the farmer to keep producing crop? Farming is a risky business, and subsidies are like a type of insurance to most farmers. I believe that because subsidies are funded by our tax dollars, we should have a stricter system for issuing government subsidies to farmers and make sure that they don't go straight to money-hungry billionaires who want to take advantage of the system.
