The Growing Burden of College Fees

http://www.propublica.org/article/course-load-the-growing-burden-of-college-fees. Due 7 Oct 2013. What are the causes of fee increases?? What are the back end opportunity costs of not having an affordable university system??

  1. College fees are increasing due to less state support they're getting. The government isn't helping funding of universities across the United States so there being forced to gain revenue from other sources which would be charging incoming students and students already attending these universities for almost everything possible. the back end cost to this is that not everyone can afford this and its making it harder for common man to go to a university and receive a good education. It is just unaffordable the cost per year for these universities plus the fees they charge once your there.

  2. These fee increases will cause students not to enroll for future academic semesters or for incoming graduates to register at all. Why would these students pay for tuition as well as fees for maintenance of their campus from their own pockets? The backend costs of not having an affordable university system would be the fear or outlook of the university not being able to up-keep the campus in the near future. This may cause budget cuts from left to right for students and staff.

  3. College fees are springing up left and right because the states aren't supporting their colleges as much as they used to. Certain programs require more funding and instead of raising tuition on those whom are taking those classes, they simply create a "fee" among everyone applying for the school. They get more money because the fee applies to a wider audience. The costs of having fees is that students might start to ask more questions and ultimately walk away from a school that is becoming so costly. Colleges won't be able to keep up with their own maintenance and programs may be hanging on by a thread, costing them more students.

  4. College fees are rising due to poor economic choices made by the state. Budget cuts have been a major factor in educational investments, forcing many colleges to rise their fees, whatever they may be. And in response students have been taking out huge loans (that probably wont be paid) in order to continue their education, sucking more money out of the system. Colleges are raising fees to make up for lost money. Plus, this process only separates those who want to get a higher education from those who are looking for a good time. And even if students couldn't afford a public university or a private one for that manner, we live in a society today, where people can survive off a "minimum wage education", there's no incentive to do better than a high school diploma if you aren't already a knowledge-driven student. If colleges lowered fees, they will lower their standards of education and soon the difference between a high school diploma and a college diploma will just be the name of the school and your graduation years.

  5. Since the government isn't helping the universities with their revenue, there last solution to rise prices, which is the cause of such expensive tuition and so many fees. Which leads to how are students going to afford going to college, how to move one with education to better themselves? WHAT IS THE POINT in going to school , if people nowadays are trying to live of minimum wage and they can't? what are we going to end up doing? there is no money to afford college now, and the fact that there hiding the thousands of fees you have to pay is just sad. In this world a high school diploma doesn't get you any where, so what are we suppose to do. colleges would have to lower there costs and the government would have to chip in a lot to help us all. If money circulated how its suppose to, I think we wouldn't have so much trouble with the economy, we just have to stop being so greedy!

  6. College fees are increasing because the government has given up on education. colleges and universities are now raising up prices to make up for the lost revue that the government has denied them . And also there is an educational inflation and colleges are using this to there advantage. They are basically saying if you don't like it go some where else but there is no where else to go. If you want to sucked in the us you need a college degree . And they know this so they raise the tuition up so they can make a profit because just like i stated in the beginning education is dieing. Kids are going into debts while these college are filled to the brim with cash from desperate lost children who are just trying to make it. This is not how education should be run education should be affordable and easily assessable. R.N.S JEFF THOMAS

  7. I think that growing burden of college fees will cause people to end up not going to college in the fear that they will end up in debt. As of right now some people find it less risky to go into military services then to go to college. I find that the fees will only go down if people don't go to college but this could be potentially more harmful. The world only progresses through obtaining new knowledge of the world. I can't say that colleges raising there fees are unwarranted. If one lives on campus then a maintenance fee should be expected. Honestly the only reason colleges can raise prices is because people are willing to pay these raised prices. If people just said no and got a degree from a smaller college then prices would go down or equalize to where no college stands to be more prestigious then another.

  8. I feel that this additional fees are crazy i understand that many college had to get a budget cut from the state but to hid fee just to get more money is just ridicule. After many families have paid for tuition, room and broad and also a meal plan. Now you want them to pay extra money and fees like the undergraduate entering fee you would think the 20,000 plus dollars some student pay as tuition would be my entering fee if some college continue to do this a lot of students will start to go to community colleges because they can't afford to pay tuition and all these extra fees. A lot of families already have to struggle to get the tuition money now you expect them to pay more money.

  9. College fees are rising due to poor economic choices made by government. Budget cuts have been a major factor in education, forcing many colleges to rise their fees. But by rising fees colleges are making higher education harder to attain. The burden of college fees will cause people to end up not going to college in the fear that they will end up in debt, without having a good job to be able to pay it off. The fees will only go down if people don't go to college, but this could be potentially dangerous. Without education society fails to make progress.

  10. The reason why the college fees are going up I price is because they don't get any help from the government. Lots of school have been getting price cuts which also is a big factor in increasing fees . The backend cost of this I believe is that if a college is to expensive in price, people wont go to that college, instead look at other colleges that are less expensive. Keep in mind, people are already struggling as it is for college, adding money is just going to give everyone more of a struggle. People need education, without education what would happen to America?

  11. The increasing fees are due to the fact that schools are receiving less state support. Not only that, but schools are also raising prices and calling them fees instead of tuition. The backend costs to having higher prices are that fewer people will not only be unwilling to pay tuition, but fewer people will be unable to afford tuition. This will cause fewer people to go to school and get an education.

  12. College "fees" have been increasing because of lowered funding from the state. The colleges need to get their money one way or another, and charging many small "fees" help the colleges to get the required money. Colleges can't increase tuition so they charge the fees so they follow the rules. The back end costs of not having an affordable university system are that many students will be unable to attend college. With less college students comes more uneducated members of society leading to struggles in jobs that require higher educations. Many people are going to try to go to community colleges or colleges that have less fees as well.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The growing burden of college fees will soon cause a decrease of students to attend state colleges. What is causing these fees to increase is a lack of state funding to the various colleges. There is so much a given state can distribute to the state colleges due to various economic cutbacks. Hence, the increase of college fees to regain some revenue from the students. A backend opportunity cost of not having an affordable university system is a decrease of students attending state college and an increase of most students attending trade schools or getting certificate jobs. Eventually there would be a decrease meaning in getting a degree, which will cause a horrible future for America.

  14. College fees are increasing due to the slashing of school funds. Colleges began to start adding in new fees that are pretty much part of the tuition. They call them fees because their tuition is fixed and they have no choice but to rename it. In some colleges, these fees are self imposed by the students, though. The costs to these fee increases are that less students will go to college. Many students will start working straight out of high school instead of going to college and there will be less doctors, engineers, technicians, and etc.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As college fees increase, less students attend state colleges. The government will be responsible in not providing future students a college education and withholding them of opportunities in life. The government not providing the funds needed for college will force colleges to add more fees, since they can't technically increase tuition. The backend oppurtinity costs of not having an affordable university system will be grave. Students will be attending trade schools and they won't be able to show their full potential. America's future is in our hands. If we can't get a proper education, how will we improve the economy for everyone?

  16. Fees are increasing because all this ''additional money'' that colleges demand from either undergraduates or other students is going to serve them for a great cause, which now comes to the fact why some colleges make it mandatory. It serve them as some kind of ''revenue'', not to mention the admissions fees and/or the residence fees. Also, they aren't going up purposely to make students and their parents suffer financially but it's because of the federal governnment's lack of interference and support. The back end opportunity costs of not having an affordable university system are that a lot of high school graduates won't get motivated to pursuit their education by going to college.

  17. State funding has decreased and as a result colleges and universities have raised their fees. The new fees will cover some of the programs, such as engineering and nursing. For the school not charge only those specific program, they make these new fees and charge all the students equally. The fees will not only cover the programs but the maintenance of the school and other unknown costs. The fees are suppose to be temporary but they really aren't. The tuitions are fixed and they colleges had to label these extras as 'fees'. As colleges expenses increase, the students will not be able to afford their education. Many will have to drop out of college, to not go through a debt they will never get out of. The backend opportunity costs of this, is that many students will prefer to work and be unmotivated to go study in college due to the rising education costs

  18. Colleges' tuition are rising incredibly. The negative outcome of this is student having to pay $35,000 per year. That amount of money is half the parent's annual income. Maybe even more than half. Students who want to pursue their education has to pay a huge amount of money to colleges they want to go to.
"For public institutions, declining state support has left many schools scrambling to find other types of revenue." Having states stop supporting colleges with finance is a bad idea. If you have to pay 35,000 per year, imagine that times four. The tuition covers text books, dorm room, and etc., but most of these money are going to the school for maintenance because the state stopped helping the colleges.
"College administrators also acknowledge that sometimes a "fee" is easier for students to stomach than a "tuition" increase" The fact that they need to replace the word tuition with fee shows how high the price is. The word tuition makes high school students go anxious, therefore, colleges thought it would be better to replace tuition with fee. It's a safe word. Just like how we call it the Great Repression instead of Depression.

  19. Each and every year, college fees as well as tuitions are increasing left and right since the states are not supporting the colleges as much as in years past. Since certain schools have more complex programs, certain programs require a lot more funding, in order to fill this gap they raise the price of fees for applying to the school instead of raising the tuition for those taking the class. This is a rather smart strategy because this forces a wider variety of people to pay for the funding, not just the people taking the courses. The one main disadvantage of this strategy is that many applying students will question the rather large fee, and just not even consider the school anymore because of the outrageous price. The more students that walk away from these fees, and colleges will have to pay more and more money.

  20. College fees keep increasing year by year due to the lack of fund they are recieving from the government. Also colleges add additional fees that are unnecessary for students to pay. They do it because they know people will pay it just so they can attend the college. The backend cost of not having an affordable university system is less people attending universities and getting the education they deserve. Most people will just attend state or community colleges because its the only thing they can afford at this point. This is not fair to students that have low income parents. I feel education is very important and the government should fix this problem so more students can attend the universities of their dreams at an affordable price.

  21. The causes of fee increase is the school's wanting for more money to make it look better. They trick unsuspecting families of undergraduates that are relieved to be accepted to the college into having to pay extra money for programs and activities that don't even apply to the student. The back end cost will be less students applying to the college because poorer families won't be able to take on the additional fees.

  22. College fees are increasing due to the poor support of the state to the schools. Colleges have been denied revenues by the state and the government leaving them no choice but to elevate the price for registering in the school. The backend costs to this are severely negative. Since raising the tuition price would cause too much of a riot, colleges are finding ways in which to stealthily access students' money. Schools have decided to raise the prices of fees as well as come up with new fees. A lot of these fees are useless and do not even apply to the student much less benefit them. These fees are simply dues that go to into funding the school itself. When students realize that the price to attend the school is too high they will most likely search for a more affordable school. This will affect the school severely, as it will lead to an increase in student drop out rate as well as a decrease in the amount of enrollments in the freshman class. This in return can lead to minimal money intake by the school and can ultimately lead to the closing of the school due to insufficient funding.

  23. The cause for the increase in college fees is due to the way that colleges attempt to support themselves. By not receiving enough support from the economy or state, they are forced to look towards their incoming students and possibly charge them for every little things, especially those from out of state. Not only that, but once they student is enrolled and attending, they capture them by charging these families for expenses they did not know about, or were not told of them. The back end opportunity costs are that students can no longer afford the education that they deserve. While not wanting to be in debt from students loans, they are forced to find a more affordable way to attend college and get their required education.

  26. There is a combination of reasons why college fees are rising such as the lack of state support and that the schools can charge whatever they feel necessary. What these increased fees are going to cause is lower college enrollment, which down the road will cause a work force that is untrained and unprepared to handle future work.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The cause of prices of college tuition to increase is due to the fact that they do not get any support from the state or government and the tuitions the students pay is how they support themselves. The back end costs of this is that less and less students will continue their education in college because of the high prices. This increase in prices will also cause many if not most of the students to take out loans which will most likely not be paid, which has a negative effect on the economy. Also causing many students to graduate with well over $100k in debt.

  28. Fee increases can prevent students from enrolling in classes in upcoming semesters. The backend costs of this are that people will be unwilling to pay for a large amount of tuition because it is way more than they could afford, they also wont be able to attend college. The reason for these fees are because of the lack of support from the state. The universities/colleges will be unstable because of the lack of students and money they will receive. The schools function around the students who support it and without the students, the school will have many problems.

  29. Based non the articlemuch it's obvious that the main conflict here is the fact that college fees are increasing due to lack of support from the state, also we all can agree that some of the economic choices made by the state isn't the wisest. Another reason is that the government helping the universities with their revenue, so the universities can't do much than increasing the fees in plethora of things; living in the hands of the students to cope with. So if it was difficult for students to pay for tuition back when it was a regular price; how much harder and challenging it is now for students to have to make the decision in going to college or just seek for a full time job, after all they wouldn't be able to afford it anyway.Clearly, the back en opportunity costs of not having an affordable university system is that many students won't be able to afford to go to a college or a university. We all that it's very hard to be successful in this life without education, even though many have made it without the key to success it's very unpredictable out there. Let's that it can better instead of worst.

  30. The increase in fees is dude to lack of state government support. Because the colleges aren't being provided with enough support they are forced to give out small fees that in the end add up to a lot of money. The back end cost of this is that less people will be applying to college and those who will apply are going to have to apply for loans so they can afford to go to college. But when they graduate from college a lot of them will not be able to afford to pay back their loans.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The cause of fee increases is that the colleges are not getting the money that they need. The colleges are making fees of which college students shouldnt have to pay. As time progresses more and more people are going to be able to go to college since they wont be able to afford everything. Less people going to college is going to provide less opportunities for people and there being a desire for higher end jobs that people cant fill since they cant afford it. In the end youre going to get people who will be less skilled then others which isnt going to benefit people really at all.

  32. Since colleges are losin state support, they're making it more expensive for students to attend their school. When young students look at brochures I colleges that they're interested in, most of them are discouraged. Tuition is so high and there's so many fees that students now don't even put in effort to go to the big schools. Only students that come from families that can support it go to those certain schools. Most students have two options, go to a smaller junior college, or go to college & struggle paying & be in debt of student loans. I feel as that's what is going to happen soon. After graduating from college, people spend years paying back student loans, just because they chosed a big time university. The system that colleges are using is discouraging young kids in America

    ReplyDelete
  33. Increased fees at state colleges and universities alike, are on the rise by lack of support from their respective state. These rises will cause reconsideration by many to not enroll in higher education. This can become a major problem in the future when there isn't enough people to support a field that requires higher education. This dilemma by state governments to lack support for state colleges/universities to conserve money is a poor long term economic decision and will ultimately lead to a poorer economy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The causes of fee increases are that the government is not helping enough. There is not that much support from the states. So, it causes students to pay a lot of fees. The back end opportunity costs of not having an affordable University system is that a lot of kids won't be able to afford colleges or Universities. It will be impossible for them to even think about leaving on campus, because they are already paying a lot of fees. They also pay fees for things they are not even going to be a part of. So, that causes a lot of students to work a lot and try to pay for college, or after they're done with school they have to spend years of paying student loans or other debts. So, I think paying for all those fees put more stress on us as students and more harder for us to pay for school.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The causes of fee increases are that the colleges and universities are not getting the proper funding from their respective state. So in order to meet the financial need of the institution they are going to the students, and making them pay more fees. The costs of having fees is that students will eventually not be able to afford to attend the schools or not want to attend due to the high expenses of going to the particular university. They will lose a lager percentage of students. As for the student that end up attending, they wont be able to pay off their loans due to to the statue of our economy and will eventually end with a bad economy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. college fees are increasing due to lack of support by the state. therefore colleges are increasing fees and students aren't going to be able to afford it so,less students will not be attending college. and that will only lead to students not getting enough education because of all the fees that the colleges are requiring students to pay. those students that actually go to college have to apply for student loans and by the time the graduate from college they pay back the loans they will be in debt.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The cause of the fee increase is due to the lack of state support. The backend costs of not having an affordable education system is that fewer students will want to attend college. Many students will fear not being able to pay off their student loans and avoid going to college or find an alternative place to get their education from. The fee increases could also cause students to avoid college completely causing them to not get the education that they deserve.

    ReplyDelete
  38. since the state is not as involved as it should be, that is why college fees are increasing. their is no support and therefore the colleges would need money, so why not charge the students. If the fees continue to increase, less students will want to attend colleges and universities considering not everyone can afford it. We are the people of tomorrow, if they dont want us having an education then our generation is basically screwed. they should be more involved than they are.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Because of the lack of support coming in from the state the universities and college have to fend for themself and raise the prices of tuition and even charge for things counted as free. Because of the high tuition fees most of the times students will choose to attend a different college because with the amount of money it takes to go to some of the colleges of choice will probably cost a lot of student loans that take a while to pay off so students wouldnt want to go to school causeing the rate of students who go to college to decrease

    ReplyDelete
  40. college fees are increasing because of a lack of support from the states, based on the article. So to compensate for their lost, the colleges have to charge us with many fees here and there. Since they had already promised us a tuition, to keep their promises they don't call these extra charges tuition, they call them "fees." not having an affordable university system is making it harder for most of our high school graduates to get an education. only few will have the opportunity to accomplish their dreams. this in the long run will affect the status of the country and the economy because those high school students are the future of the nation. the literacy rate may even drop because if people know they won't be able to afford college, they won't even bother stay in school. we will have more dropouts and less professionals in our country.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The causes of increased college fees would be diminishing government support if education. Since college professors are required to have such high qualifications in their field of study, they get paid more money than your standard public school teacher. With a lot of the budget going to them and school maintainence, there is little to no money left for individual student spending. This is why college students must buy their textbooks every year. Also, the price of textbooks has been rising exponentially over the years. The opportunity cost of these expenses would be that students will just opt out of college and find a job right out of high school. The price of studebt loans and housing and whatnot just wont be worth it, so students would rather invest their time in one or two jobs straight out of high school which would mean a decrease in specialization in the future. We would have fewer and fewer doctors every year as well as lawyers and other demanding jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The fees increasing will cause students to not enroll for future academic semesters, future graduates to not enroll at all, or try to find other alternatives to college, or just depend on a plethora of low income jobs. Not everyone is able to pay for tuition, or other costs that tag come along with a college education on their own? The backend costs of not having an affordable university system would be the a change in the outlook of universities not being able to keep up their campuses, which may result in budget cuts.
