  2. Some advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that it would help the economy, it would aid the people who have Schizophrenia, the crime rate would drop and probably people who went to jail for marijuana would be set free, I also think that marijuana would be easier to get than getting from the black market. Some disadvantages would be black market profits will drastically drop, also the driving of the people who are under the influence of marijuana would be bad and the safety of others would be at a all time high, I also think a disadvantage would be a lot of car accidents happening all over the place. Some regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry would be the changes of the OSL and how they have created additional enterprise value for OSL Holdings and continue to validate OSL Holdings' business model. They also have inspired OSL Holdings to refine its mission to enter the legal medical marijuana markets when federal law permits. Lastly the major concern about the legalization of marijuana that was noted by the new York times would be the concern of the peoples health like the inducement of lung cancer for example and how the younger generation will react to this.

  3. A advantage of creating a legal market for marijuana in Colorado is that it will become more easily accessible to people who use it as a aid for diseases and pain relief, such as persons with cancer. Another advantage of a legal marijuana market is that the police will be able to focus on catching criminals that are distributing drugs that have proven harmful or fatal to the population, such as cocaine and heroine. Also with the government placing a high tax on the sale of marijuana, it will generate revenue for the government so that it can have more money for things that lack funding. A disadvantage of a legal marijuana market is that there may be an increase of drug smuggling from Colorado to the states where marijuana is not yet legalized, thus increasing the crime rate in those states if the smugglers are caught. Another disadvantage is that there might be more widespread abuse of the substance, causing people to lose their jobs, fail tests, or receive tickets for drugged driving. Also there might be a larger distribution of marijuana to minors with it being so accessible, which may start them with a smoking habit from a young age. A regulation that has been made for the marijuana industry in Colorado is that a system of legal production and supply has been created. It is subject to licensing, taxation, as well as persons under 21 not being able to purchase marijuana. Also, only a maximum of six plants are allowed for personal production, and non commercial transactions of a maximum of one ounce are allowed. The commercial market will be regulated by the Marijuana Enforcement Division. They will be responsible for making and monitoring procedures for the issuing, renewal and cancelling of licenses, as well as labelling, health and safety and advertising restrictions. The New York Times feels like marijuana should be legalized in all states. They compare the marijuana ban to the failed Prohibition of the 1920's because many young Americans are getting locked up for possession of marijuana, just as in the 1920's when may were being locked up for alcohol.

  5. The advantages to creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are that it brings in a lot of tourist which brings in money and also many students are applying to schools in Colorado now which creates more of a work force. Also despite popular belief crime rate and traffic fatalities went down.
Some disadvantages are that even though it is now legal still 40% sell marijuana illegally. Out of the 'estimated 287,000 pounds expected to be consumed this year, only about 170,000 pounds will come from legal medical or recreational outlets' along with the income being $12 million dollars instead of the expected $33.5 million dollars.
Regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry are, no selling to minors, across state borders, or laundering money. Colorado residents are limited to buying an ounce (28 grams). For out-of-towners, it's a quarter of an ounce. Also it is legal to grown up to 6 plants.
The New York Times' main concern is the impact on developing adolescent minds.

  6. The advantages of creating marijuana legal in Colorado is that it would help and treat people who has sclerosis, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors and much more sickness. Some ill people would use marijuana and that would help them instead of other medications. Also, the crime rate has gone down a lot. Legalizing marijuana has gotten people jobs and now people don't have to get arrest for drug dealing in the streets. Another advantage would be that now they will have more room in prisons for actual criminals and murders because they won't arrest people with marijuana on the streets. Maybe another advantage would be that the government has raised the tax on marijuana so the government would make a lot of money. A another advantage would be that Colorado Legislature has passed a law allowing marijuana industry to create their own banking cooperative. It was said that marijuana isn't a gateway drug, so people who are into marijuana wouldn't go up a level of drug use, like heroin or cocaine. Another advantage for Colorado would be since Colorado is the only place that is legalized, they will get more tourist and tourist money. A disadvantage would be that they have laced candy, cookies, and other little snacks that children would eat on daily basis. So if the adults do not properly place them where children can't reach it, the little children would then eat it and may get hooked on at a very young age. Another disadvantage would be that people would abuse the legalized drug so much that they will die. For example, according to the article it says that "There have been a few reports incidents of high doses of edibles sickening people." and " In one tragic incident, a Denver man hallucinated and shot his wife to death." Another disadvantage of legalizing marijuana in Colorado would be that they will be facing problems in collection because about 40% of the marijuana sold in Colorado is home grown for personal use and isn't taxed. Some regulations made for the marijuana industry is that if the business is found to have violated rules such as selling to minors or across state lines, or laundering money their banking cooperative would be broken. Also, to enter a Colorado pot store, or to buy pot, they must have proof stating they are 21 or over. According to the article, it says that that regulation is being enforced strictly. Also, Colorado residents are limited to buying an ounce, and for out of towners, its a quarter of an ounce. The New York Times main concern with marijuana is the impact on developing adolescent brains. And they are also concerned about the disproportionate impact marijuana laws on young black men, who were arrested for it. Also, some people with chronic health conditions that can be eased with the use of marijuana has to move to Colorado. So they want to legalize it in the states for medical use. Oh, also they are concerned with how the young children would react to it, marijuana should only be an adult drug and not the little ones.

  7. Legalizing marijuana in Colorado has brought the state many economic opportunities. More people are moving to Colorado for business. According to the article, Bill Zweitzig claimed that he moved to Colorado because he doesn’t want to take the risk of going to jail for selling marijuana. There would a decrease of dealers in the black market since marijuana is a popular drug. The rate of crime may a dramatic decease as well. Ever since the legalization the state experienced an exponential increase of tourism due to the legalization. Businesses like Euflora have made lot revenue from tourist. Business owner Jamie Perino has stated that most of Eulora customers are from out of state. People have the chance to make a lot of money as a pot store owner. Not only have Colorado business owners experienced an increase in revenue but the state has made some good use of the drug. Recreational buyers have to pay a 2.9% tax, there is a 10% sales tax for special pot and, stores has to pay a 15% retail excise tax. Marijuana also has a special use in the medical field. People can use the drug to treat illnesses such as glaucoma, tumors, sclerosis and other serious illnesses. Some people would prefer to use marijuana over other drugs because it is more effective. Despite all advantages that marijuana has, there are aspects that say that legalizing marijuana is a bad idea. Some people are growing pot for their own use or they are selling it illegal. Colorado had to make some regulation for those who would abuse the new legal drug. The Colorado Legislature has passes a law which allows the marijuana industry to create its own banking cooperative. Other regulations include, selling to minors, laundering money, or selling across the state border. Buyers could only buy a once if they are Colorado residents and outsider could only buy a quarter of an ounce. There may also be an increase of impaired driver for those who use the drug irresponsible. However the biggest concern would accord the New York Times is the impact for growing adolescents. Some products such as candy would entice kids to use the drug.

  8. Though the legalization of Marijuana is good for tourism and business owners in the pot industry, Colorado faces a problem with 40% of Marijuana not being taxed because its home grown and used for personal use. Regulations include not being able to purchase Marijuana without proof of I.D showing that you're 21 years old. Colorado residents can only purchase an amount up to an ounce and out of towners can only purchase a quarter of an ounce. The main concern for the NY times is the impact Marijuana has on the developing brains of minors.

  9. Like all things, there are advantages and disadvantages to creating a marijuana market in Colorado. But the advantages seem to outweigh the disadvantages. Legalizing marijuana has lowered the crime rates (including violent crime) as well as the number of car accidents these past few months. It has also created more revenue in Colorado due to the increase of tourism. Although it was not legal in the past, people were still dealing drugs. Now that it is legal, the government is expected to make over $33.5 million in tax money. Marijuana can also help people who have serious illnesses, including Parkinson’s disease. People who are not able to retrieve a medical marijuana license are able to visit Colorado and help treat their illness. Although there are many advantages to this, there are also some disadvantages. There have been several reported cases of people who have overdosed, and in one case killed another person. Also, marijuana companies are making candy which can easily be within reach of young children. If parents were to accidentally leave it out, it would be very dangerous for a child who would come across it. Another disadvantage is that people are able to grow up to six marijuana plants for personal use but they are selling it to other people illegally. In order to stop these things from happening, several regulations were made. According to this article, stores that are selling marijuana have to check people’s ids to make sure they are over 21 years old. Another regulation is that Colorado citizens are only allowed to buy an ounce of marijuana and visitors are only allowed to buy a quarter of an ounce. Even though there are many positive things that come from creating a marijuana market in Colorado, the NY Times is very concerned that legalizing marijuana could interfere with the development of children. If they were to find the laced candy, they could be severely affected.

  10. The advantages of creating marijuana legal in Colorado is that it can help people that have any type of health problem, crime rates would go down because so many people who sell marijuana illegally wouldn't be charged. A lot of people go to Colorado just for that reason. Just like any other thing there is always a down fall, some disadvantages would be that you would need to have an proof that you have a medical condition and children might get a hold of it. Regulations were made because of these things to buy marijuana you must show an id to prove you are 21 or older. Visitors are only allowed to buy a quarter of an ounce. Colorado citizens are only allowed to buy an ounce of marijuana. The NY Times is concerned that legalizing it might cause brain damage to kids that might encounter it.

  11. The legalization of marijuana is a continuously ever-present controversy in today's society. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Do we as a nation move towards a more progressive state? It seems as though Colorado has become our county's guinea pig in dealing with the marijuana market place. Besides the obvious and enticing benefits of tax revenue from the sale of marijuana - an estimated 33.5 million in Colorado - the drug has promising capabilities in the medical world. Not only has the drug treated multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors, etc., it also has been proven to help with smaller, yet important day to day problems such as headaches, body aches, and restlessness. As for addiction, the New York Times has found marijuana to be less dependency ridden than that of alcohol and tobacco. In Colorado it was also found that traffic fatalities were lowered - down from the 13 years average - as well as crime. Could it then be possible, that driving under the influence of marijuana is safer than when under the influence of alcohol? Marijuana businesses are limited to selling an ounce for Colorado residents, and a quarter of an ounce for people who reside out of state. However, an individual could walk into a liquor store and purchase an unlimited supply of alcohol without question. Could it also then be possible, that if crime rate is down, residents will have to pay fewer taxes for the amenities that prisoners receive? Surpluses of "criminals" are placed in the prison system due to the sale of marijuana. If legalized, the prison population would drop inevitably. The drawbacks of creating a legal marijuana market may include the possibility of high doses sickening people - as seen in the incident with the Denver man who shot his wife while hallucinating. Colorado also faces the problem of illegally sold or not taxed marijuana. According to the Marijuana Enforcement Division, "of the estimated 287,000 pounds expected to be consumed this year, only about 170,000 pounds will come from legal medical or recreational outlets". This not only means a loss of money for the state, but also means that the amount being sold is not being watched. As for regulations in the industry - besides the ounce for residents and quarter of an ounce for those out of state - you have to be 21 or older to purchase, and cannot take it out of state lines. The New York Times investigation has found that, "there are no significant health risks for healthy adults". Their main concern is with the impact of marijuana on an adolescent brain, which has been shown to not be fully developed until the age of 21. As for the question if our nation will move toward a more progressive state, only time will tell.

  12. Some advantages to legalizing marijuana are that the crime rate has decrease. Also it can help people that have any type of health problem. Colorado is making more money on tourism due to the fact that so many people want to go to a place where pot is legal! Now that it is legal, the government is expected to make over $33.5 million in tax money. And more people are moving to Colorado for business. Also many people will illnesses are having the opportunity to be treated with medical marijuana. Some disadvantages include an increase in smuggling through airports where it is illegal. as well as, people abusing the substance which will effect their jobs witch will have snowball effect on the community. Regulations according to the article include Colorado residents are limited to buying an ounce (28 grams). For out-of-towners, it's a quarter of an ounce. The median price for recreational marijuana is about $16 a gram (medical is about $10), according to a 538.com survey. The times main concern is that children will get hooked on the substance due to the candies and ways of advertisements that appeal to the children.

  13. After reading the article I believe the advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado outweigh the disadvantages. The marijuana market has increased tourism and tax revenues in Colorado. Colleges in Colorado have gotten a third more applicants and the money it is bringing in from this industry is outstanding. Legalizing the marijuana market helps treat illnesses and could be life saving medicinally. Crime has gone down since legalizing. The disadvantages are also there. Although the industry has brought a lot of money in, the illegal growth and selling is still there. 40% of marijuana grown is not taxed and used for personal use. Marijuana can also do brain damage to users which is an important issue. I like the reference they used with alcohol because it is true that with any drug, it depends how responsible you are when using it. You need to control the use of the drug. Regulations that have been made for the industry include the amount you can buy, the age you can buy it at and how much each person can plant. The main concern of the New York Times regarding the legalization is the impact on developing adolescent brains. The candies need to stay out of the reach of children and only to be used by young children if an adult is distributing it to them for medicinal purposes.

  14. For every occurrence of a topic, there will always be the advantages and disadvantages of them. But in the legalization of marijuana case, there seems to be more advantages than disadvantages. Legalizing marijuana has numerous positive effects, such as the lowering of crime rates and the number of car accidents occurring. The revenue cost has increased from the legalization in Colorado, due to more people visiting the state in search of purchasing legalized marijuana. Now that the drug is formally legalized, the government is expected to make $33.5 million dollars worth from the taxes upon it. Not only does the government benefit from having the drug legalized, but people who have illnesses are able to use marijuana as a way to ease the pain, make life more bearable, etc. Marijuana is able to help with Parkinson’s disease, tumors, glaucoma, and various others. People are now able to purchase a medical marijuana license and use the plant to help their illness. Besides the fact that marijuana has numerous uses that can be considered the pros, there are also cons to the legalization of it. Marijuana is now being converted into candy forms for children and elders who are unable to smoke it, or don’t want to. This can cause serious complications if someone eats the candy, without knowing what is really inside of it. Although it is technically legal in the state of Colorado, not everyone has a license to sell/buy it. People are allowed to grow up to six marijuana plants for “personal use”, but could be selling them to people illegally. To stop this action, regulations have been enforced to keep only people with a license able to sell/buy the plant. One regulation enforces that you have to be over 21 in order to purchase any type, while another states that Colorado citizens are only able to purchase one ounce at a time, while visitors to the state are restricted to one fourth of an ounce. Although the legalization of it gives valid advantages and disadvantages, the NY Times is concerned that it will stifle the development of children.

  15. The legalization of marijuana in Colorado has many advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I do believe that people who absolutely need it, should be the ones who have access to it. The advantages with legalizing this drug are that people who have cancer or anorexia (along with many other diseases and disorders) are able to feel a little better. Marijuana helps these people to feel hungry so that they can eat or in other words get the "munchies". Another advantage of legalizing marijuana in Colorado is that it is bringing in loads of money for the economy. If they start legalizing these shops all over the country, this will create more job opportunities for people. The crime rate will decrease which is another advantage. Although there are many advantages, there are also disadvantages. One disadvantage is that the THC in marijuana kills brain cells. An eight year old with cancer smoking marijuana is slowing his growth because at 8, the brain isn't fully developed. The brain isn't fully developed until ages 21-25. Residents in Colorado are limited to buying an ounce. The major concern about the legalization of marijuana as noted by the New York Times is that teenagers may be more vulnerable to addiction and become dependent on the drug.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of the legalization of marijuana in Colorado. Some of the benefits of this is the tourism which will bring profit to the state. In the article, it explains that Colorado was this year’s hotspot for spring break. Another benefit is that it helps people treat their illnesses, like sclerosis, Parkinson’s, glaucoma, tumors, and many more diseases. (It is said that marijuana helps more for their condition than the actual medications prescribed by their doctors.) An advantage is that crime rates are going down. The legalization has given people jobs now that they aren’t getting arrested for dealing out in the open and in the streets.
For the disadvantages, which is another story. One would be that they’re facing problems in collecting money because about 40% of the marijuana sold in Colorado is home grown for their personal use and isn’t being taxed. Only 170,000 pounds will be made into legal or recreational drugs this year while 287,000 pounds will be consumed. A drawback is that candy, cookies, and other snacks are being tainted with marijuana. So, little children could get addicted at a very young age drew to the foods they eat on a daily basis. People have also gotten sick and over dosing on the edibles.
The main regulations are for the marijuana industry, no selling to minors, no selling across state borders, or laundering money. And, when you enter a Colorado pot store or to buy marijuana, you must be 21 or over. The New York Times’ main concern is the influence on the mind of adolescents.

  17. the advantages of creating legal marijuana are the following: more jobs, less people with petty crime in prison, tourism, helps with illness. the disadvantages are the following: THC is known to kill brain cells, increase of smuggling through air ports, and may lead to more dangerous drugs.

Some regulations are the following: no selling to people under 21 years of age, residents are allowed to buy and ounce, and non-residents are allowed to buy a quarter of an ounce. According to the article, "California has an enormous medical cannabis market with thousands of operators, but it's rare to see a professional operation and consistent products. What regulations could bring, either by the Correa or Ammiano bills, would be stability in the industry which serves the good actors in the industry and makes things black and white for regulators and law enforcement," Cohen.

The main problem that The New York Times has is that they are concerned for young teenagers and children. As I stated above, marijuana is known as a gateway drug. this drug may lead others to do even worse drugs in their future. Also, THC is known to kill brain cells. if a child with cancer were to take it what would it do to their brains. They are concerned about the influence that the drug has on the underdeveloped minds of teens and children.

  18. Advantages of having a legal marijuana market in Colorado is cheaper remedys for people dealing with glaucoma, Tourettes, cancer treatments, and also schizophrenia. It even opens up more job opportunities in their state. Some obvious disadvantages of this new market would be people abusing it and even drug smugglers. Regulations that have been enforced for the marijuana market are saying who is allowed to purchase it.

  19. Advantages of the legalization of marijuana include it's use to ease medical deficiencies such as Glaucoma, Parkinson etc... Also according to the article crime in Colorado has gone down. And with the fact that it is not a gateway drug, it will not lead to the use of more dangerous and harmful ones. And it is not as habit forming as alcohol or tobacco. There are disadvantages though, which is expected. The under aged use of marijuana whether accidental ( weed candy consumed by children) or not. Also one person will not handle it as well as the other, which could cause harm to be inflicted on the individual or on someone else near that individual. There are regulations that keep certain people from using it such as those under the age of 21. And there are places, like the airport, where it's use is not allowed. The Times main concern is the impact of marijuana on younger users, such as teenagers and children, since it could wrongly affect their brain which is still developing at that age.

  20. In Colorado, leagilizing marijuana has led to many different advantaged. It has led to the creation of more jobs for people because of the stores that have opened and what they are selling. There will now be a need for people who know how to make cookies, candies, and treats with marihuana. Colorado was the number one spring break destination in 2012. Which also helped their economy, helping hotels and other tourist attractions in Colorado. The college applications for universities in Colorado have increased by 1/3 making more students have a desire to attend schools there because of the leagilizing of the drugs. But with any situations, there are also disadvantages to the legalization of marijuana. When buying the drug, customers must pay in cash due to the fact that it is not federally legal, only legal in the state. Although it is legal, 40% of the marijuana sold is sold illegally, keeping a consistent crime rate. Also, the expected amount to be made off of taxes was $33.5 million. But the amount made was only $12 million. There are regulations in place for the people as well. One person is only allowed to grow 6 plants and is only allowed to be sold 1 ounce if they live in state and 1/4 of an ounce if they live out of state. The law is still attempting to keep the drug out of the hands of the young and 12.5% of driving citations were due to marijuana impairments.

  21. Marijuana is a very debated topic, and has many pros and many cons. In Colorado some of the benefits is the tourism which will bring profit to the state. Many people will visit Colorado especially spring breakers. Another pro is that it can help treat illnesses, like sclerosis, Parkinson’s, glaucoma, tumors, and many more diseases. An advantage is that crime rates are going down. The legalization has given people jobs now that they aren’t getting arrested for dealing out in the open and in the streets. A regulation that has been made for the marijuana industry in Colorado is that a system of legal production and supply has been created. 22. Whether or not we should or should not legalize marijuana is a hot topic that is being discussed by many recently. Does the advantages prevail over the disadvantages, or does the disadvantages prevail over the advantages some may ask? The debate could go on and on with multiple pros and cons for this topic but I believe there are more advantages. There are many advantages of the legalization of marijuana that can be extremely beneficial to the community. There are many diseases that medical marijuana can be used for which are, but not limited to, Alzheimer, Cancer, Arthritis, Glaucoma and Sclerosis. In Marijuana there is an active chemical called, tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, that can act as a analgesic to help loosen up a patient that is in pain. This medication could improve the health of many people that are suffering from illness. Not only does it have a medical purpose, but it also is known to be a fact that it has less negative effects than a person consuming alcohol or cigarettes. Another prominent advantage of the legalization of marijuana would be crime rates. The crime rates are extremely high as of right now. There are many people being locked up into jail due using the illegal substance, marijuana. Is this "illegal" substance really damaging the society so much for a human being to be locked up into jail? People are continually smoking marijuana no matter what the government says. If Marijuana is legalized the cops will have more serious things to worry about rather than a person sitting on the street with marijuana in their body. Although there are some people that become more active when they have consumed marijuana, a majority of the people on this drug are tranquil and do not cause a destruction to our community. Another advantage is tax related. The government is losing a lot of money on not being able to obtain taxes on the manufacturing and selling of marijuana. If it was legalized this could help take the government out of recession. In Colorado, marijuana has been legalized and it has been proven in this state that the advantages are truthful. Some of the facts that have been proven in Colorado are that traffic fatalities have decreased since last year including crime. Aside from using marijuana for medical purposes, this crop could also be used for several industrial and commercial uses. It has been proven in history by the Chinese that the crop can produce clothing, rope, fishnets, pottery mats, food, and oil and many more items. As you can see, there are many advantages that may occur if this plant is legalized although there are still a few disadvantages to marijuana. One of the many concerns of the legalization of this drug is that many people think of marijuana as the beginning to more hardcore drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Although this hasn't been proven it is evident that it is a possibility this could occur. There has been a few reported incidents in Colorado where people are taking high doses of marijuana edibles and becoming sick due to the high dose. Not only are people taking high doses and creating them a gateway for becoming sick, there was also a case study/incident in Colorado where a man started hallucinating and shot his wife to death. The New York Times main concern is marijuana's impact on the development of adolescent brains. They believe that marijuana is an adult drug and should remain one. With many marijuana manufactures, creating marijuana candy such as chocolates and lollipops, it may reach out to a younger crowd which can create more fear for the impact on the development of adolescent brains. The debate could go on and on with multiple pros and cons for this topic but I believe there are more advantages.

  23. According to the article there is a variety of advantages from legalization of marijuana in Colorado such as business opportunities and economical opportunities.Cannabis is beneficial to people with neurological and ,gastrointestinal illnesses. The article also states the decrease in crime rates since the legalization. The regulations that have been enforced in Colorado are critical you must have proof you are 21 or over, also you must have a medical card stating you entitle to the drug. You are unable to take it out of the Colorado or into their airports.New York times states if marijuana is legal then people won't be able to pass drug test but if the drug is legal the testing for THC would have to come off the drug test.

  24. After being on the ballot of the 2012 election, marijuana became legalized in Colorado. “Money talks” says Perino, owner of a marijuana dispensary. Those who are against people walking around freely with the drug, goes silent once they see the tax revenue along with the decrease of the crime rate. People there are apparently slowly getting used to it and are opening up to the idea of it all. There are more marijuana stores then there are of Starbucks. People come from out of state to purchase the marijuana, which is good for the businesses. Colorado has become a popular vacation location as well as the colleges have received a surplus of applicants. Citizens of Colorado could receive cards to get medical marijuana for lower tax rates.
Of course there are some negatives to the marijuana industry. Although there is a huge market for the sale of marijuana, it is also grown for personal usage, about 40 percent, which is not taxed. The state collected less than half of the estimated marijuana taxes, only being about $12 million instead of $33.5 million. The effect of marijuana on the body takes longer to get out of the system and some drug tests can’t detect the level of intoxication.
Customers must pay with cash only, so each store has to have an armed guard to transport money, since marijuana is still banned federally. In order to purchase or even enter a pot store, you have to show proof of being 21 older. According to Colorado Legislature, banks are allowed to work with the marijuana industry unless tie is broken. Residents are limited to 28 grams and nonresidents, up to a quarter ounce. Marijuana isn’t allowed in Coloradoan airports.
The main concern of the NY times is the impact on adolescence brains and their ability to develop with the drug just lying around in the homes. Columnist Maureen Dowd’s for the New York Times, reported that there were a couple of cases high doses and people getting sick and a tragic incident when a man shot his wife to death; but as a whole the crime rate has been down. NY Times came to the conclusion that it should be up to each individual state to decide if marijuana is legal.

  25. The legalization of marijuana has proved to be a really good decision for the
market in Colorado because it is generating a lot of money in taxes and it has
boosted the amount of tourism profoundly since its legalization. Also, the crime
rate has gone down and more people are applying to college. I also feel that
because marijuana has been legalized, people have become a little less
judgmental towards those who had previously used marijuana recreationally, which
is making people more accepting to new things and ideas. Another advantage to
the legalization of marijuana is that people who had gotten it before illegally
are not at risk of getting something that was laced with another drug. As
always, there are disadvantages to everything. Those who have little experience
with marijuana may not know how to handle being in a completely different state
of mind. Because they are not used to being in such a state, they may cause
disruption. Another thing is that because people sometimes hallucinate when
their on the drug, they can become violent if they see something threatening,
which is very dangerous. Also, many people who are buying marijuana have
children. If these people bring their products home-especially those made to
look like sweets-and their children find them, the children may be tempted to
eat the product, mistaking it for candy. So it might become easier for children
to get their hands on the drug. One more thing is that people who are suffering
from diseases or pain that could not get a medicinal marijuana card can now go
get marijuana without any struggle. Some of the regulations made for the
legalization of marijuana are thatcustomers must be 21 years of age or older.
There are special banking cooperatives for marijuana sellers. Also, no marijuana
can be sold across state borders, it is not allowed in the airport and no
selling to minors. People who live in the state of Colorado can purchase only
one ounce, and people coming from other states can only buy one-fourth of an
ounce. All of these rules are strictly enforced. The major concern of the New
York Times is the impact on developing adolescent brains. If children get their
hands on marijuana, it can be very bad for their development. Marijuana that is
shaped like candy can fool a young person’s eye.

  26. The advantages Colorado has gained from legalizing marijuana economically are amazing! Since its now sold legally the state can tax the item. This creates millions of dollars in revenue for Colorado, all this extra revenue for the state gives them funds for schools, medicine, parks, and other recreational activities that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to before. On top of the boost in the economy through taxes the housing market has increased as well. Prices of the real estate in Colorado have increased in value which is another sign that they have economically improved. Another advantage of this is crime rates being significantly lowered. Drunk driving has been decreased, so has murders, and robbery's. New York Times Magazine has put there input into the whole situation with Colorado and what they say makes a lot of sense. They explain that in marijuana there are no significant health issues in adults that use the drug compared to people who use tobacco and alcohol products. Another topic they brought concern to was to try and keep this new market exclusive to adults and keep kids away. The kids will make there own decisions as adults but shouldn't be targeted as consumers by the producers. In my opinion after learning all these advantages of legalizing marijuana I feel Colorado made a smart choice.

  27. The advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado include increased income for its sellers, attraction of tourists, and less arrests. The disadvantages are popularization of common drug use, child exposure to drugs, and easy access to it could lead to addiction. All of these factors depend on the self control of a particular individual, but should still be considered valid concerns for adolescents experiencing peer pressure. The common use of marijuana could make it even more popular among teens than it is today. If so many people access it while it is illegal, and supposedly more difficult to obtain, imagine how many people would smoke if it was readily accessible. Medicinal marijuana is banned in more than half of the United States. There are even regulations in place in Colorado that limit customers to one ounce. The major concern for the legalization of marijuana according to the NY times is the effect it may have on the development of adolescent brains. I am all for progression, however, I definitely think this should be further evaluated before more states allow legal distribution of marijuana.

  28. There come advantages and disadvantages to legalizing marijuana in Colorado. One of the major advantages would be that it can be taxed.Recreational buyers pay a 2.9 percent state sales tax. It could be used for aid since most of the common consumers range from of 45 to 55 years of age who are more prone to having an unfortunate and painful disease. There has also been an increase in that type of business industry, for example Jamie Perino took a "chance to make a lot of money as an owner." And probably one of the best advantages for the citizens that live in Colorado would be the decrease in traffic fatalities and crime rate, including violent crime. Lets not forget about tourists coming into the state buying this product making the economy grow.On the other hand some disadvantages would have to be collections. Of the estimated 287,000 pounds expected to be consumed this year, only about 170,000 pounds will come from legal medical or recreational outlets, because about 40 percent of the marijuana sold in Colorado is either grown for personal use and not taxed. Meaning that of the expected 33.5 million dollars that should of been collected only 12 million was the end result. Also more and more people are moving into Colorado making the state a more crowded and populated state. A regulation created is the limited amount of product a buy can buy. For example the Colorado resident can only an ounce and the out of towner are limited to a quarter of an ounce. Not forgetting that to be able to buy or even get in a pot store you must show proof the you are the age of 21 or over. Lastly the main concern the New York Times is most worried about is the impact of developing adolescent brains. They are worried that sweets and candies laced with marijuana may fall into the hands of children and would like to keep it an adult drug only.

  29. Just as there are disadvantages of creating a legal marijuana market, there are also many advantages. Advantages on the medical aspect of it,includes cures for many illnesses ,as stated in the article, medical marijuana has successfully treated multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors and more. On the economic side, creating legal medical marijuana markets allows for much profit. Not only through the sale of marijuana, but the attraction and tourism it brings with it. Also stated in the article is the fact that crime rate has actually declined since the legalization of marijuana in Colorado. The disadvantages include the risk of young children and adolescents consuming the "adult drug" and impairing their brain development as marijuana is known to do. There have also been cases of overdoses that has cause people to harm others. Regulations include, the required age of 21 to purchase, and the limit of one once per resident of Colorado and visitors the limit of a quarter of an ounce. The major concern about the legalization of marijuana according to the New York Times is marijuana's impact on the developing brains of adolescents, a concern anyone should have.

  30. Whether marijuana is considered an advantage or a disadvantage is up to each individual. But based on the article posted, and further information, studies show that advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The advantages start with lower crime rates, an increase in supply and demand. Colorado as to now has about 75 pot shops distributed only in Denver, imagine the whole state. This topic is considered very controversial because right now it is used mostly as a recreational drug, rather than medicinal. Of course the media will report more benefits from it than the side effects because it's all about the income and the economy. One other advantage are all the seller's who now can sell freely without having the fear of getting arrested, they can get licensed and sell without any preoccupation. The disadvantages in creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado can have an affect on the underground sellers. Since it has become legalized, now stores and companies will collect taxes off of it and benefit more the the people who sell it from an underground. As stated in the article, "Of the estimated 287,000 pounds expected to be consumed this year, only about 170,000 pounds will come from medicinal or recreational purposes." Marijuana cannot be sold across state lines, and it can only be bought by showing proof of being 21 and older. Colorado residents for example, are limited to their purchase of this drug, only an ounce is permitted. New York Times major concern right now about legalizing marijuana is the fact the minors can be greatly affected and suffer later on in life. These pot shops in Colorado sell marijuana in candy, chocolate and many other forms in which kids might be provoked into trying one day. If and adult slips any off these out to a minor, this would cause serious problems. A kid getting brain damage from a brownie with marijuana is not right. Residents in Colorado as well as the rest of the country should take in consideration the pros and cons that legalizing marijuana has on adults and especially on the youngsters.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The advantages that come with legalizing marijuana in Colorado is that it helps the people who suffer from diseases such as Parkinson's and glaucoma. Another advantage is the tax that is attached to the sale of this product. The tax collected will help the government better or economy and help fund government programs that are low in funding. One more advantage is that the crime rate has taken a plunge for the better since the legalization. And now we aren't wasting tax payer dollars on locking up people who want to smoke marijuana, we are using it to lock up the actual dangerous people such as rapists and killers.
As there are advantages to legalizing marijuana, there are still disadvantages. A disadvantage is that young users are more susceptible to being addicts because their brains have not fully developed. Brains are usually fully developed by the ages of 21-25. Smoking marijuana kills brain cells and we have these young children smoking this stuff. So even though it may be helping their cancer or whatever it happens to be, it is not helping the development of their own brains.
Some regulations that were placed on marijuana is that there is a limit to the amount of marijuana that someone can buy. Residents of Colorado are allowed to buy one ounce while non-residents are limited to a quarter of an ounce. And there are no sales allowed to people under the age of 21 years.
Last but not least, the new York times has a major concern with what this drug is doing to the brains of the young. I feel that Colorado did not do a good thing in legalizing this drug and should rethink there decision.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are the state gets more money from the taxes from the marijuana and from the tourists who go there to buy it. The disadvantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are the potential for driving under the influence of the drug or teens finding ways to use the drug. regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry are that the drug can not pass state lines and you have to be 21 to buy it. you also that a limit on how much you can buy at a time. The major concern about the legalization of marijuana as noted by the New York Times are more people will have too much and begin to hallucinate causing their judgement to suffer and someone or that person to get hurt or worse.

    ReplyDelete
  33. A great advantage of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that it is used as an aid to the people who have cancer, diseases, and even used as pain relief. Two other advantages are that police will be more focused on catching real criminals such as murders and rapist; and the taxes from selling marijuana would help the economy. Creating a legal marijuana market has its advantages but it also has its disadvantages, an example is that there may be an increase of smuggling the drug into other states. Another disadvantage is how there is still 40% of marijuana not being taxed because its illegally grown. Just like tobacco marijuana has its regulations which is not being able to buy marijuana without showing your I.D proving that your 21 years old, another regulation is how Colorado residents could only buy up to an ounce, and the out-of-towners could only purchase a quarter of an ounce. The New York Times main concern is how its impacting young Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  34. One advantage of a marijuana market Colorado is distribution for medical purposes. Another advantage is more room it's jails for real criminals, due to less enforcements on marijuana. Many people are moving to Colorado because of marijuana. Also the crime rate may decrease. The government is expected to make tens of millions of dollars by marijuana. Many sicknesses can be aided with marijuana. Some disadvantages to the drug is that minors will be more greatly exposed to it, despite the age 21 requirement. This is a serious problem because children's brain are far from completely developing, at the age of 25. This can induce depression which may lead to death. I the drug is that it should be completely banned, other than for medical purposes, where it's beneficial. Many people use it is a way to hide themselves from pain, which won't go away from not facing the problem. It has negative effects on the brain which would only lower society by more and more people using it. We should be a wiser country and need to progressively work towards that. Unnecessary public drugs like marijuana will only hurt us in the future.

  35. Within the first week of Colorado's dispensaries make huge profit pocketing 5 million dollars. Legalizing the new product has allowed the state to collect around 70 million dollars in tax revenue that combined with the increased tourism making them a top 20 U.S destination providing enough money to invite more tourism and increasing money flow and creating a cycle of good flow of money. Also based on a study Denver police department since marijuana violent crimes including homocide, sexual assault, and robbery has droped by 6.9% property crimes has also has lowered by 11.1%. Combining the two that is about a 18% decrease in crime, that's about 25 people saved and $500,000 saved in property cost. With that said there are still some problems that need ironing out. For example CNN have done a study and asked one of the dispensaries they said they see about 10,000 people a month and 20% of those costumers are out of state. The Denver police department did another study and found that 20% of DUI's are coming from people under the influence of marijuana a 8% increase since the legalized weed which could twist other state's arm about following in their footsteps. A good regulation they did put in place was the age requirement to purchase marijuana (21) so we don't have kids falling into the influence it does have. Surprisingly The New York Times believe all states should give the option of letting the people decide to legalize marijuana, but they are afraid of the number of people that might develop lung cancers. All in all other states should follow Colorado they have had huge sucess weed still does way less damage than tobacco and alcohol numbers don't lie so why not?

  36. The advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are obviously tax revenue for the state from taxes on the marijuana and the opening of the door for easy access to help alleviate symptoms people with debilitating diseases incur. The disadvantages of creating a legal market for cannabis are the effects it may have on young developing brains and the fact that people ingesting high doses may become ill. The article does state that there was one particular incident where a man hallucinated so bad that her shot his wife to death. But for the most part, Colorado has been way more well rounded since the change. Crime rates have gone down, along with traffic incidents. The regulations created in the marijuana industry are that buyers must have an identification card to purchase and must be 21 years or older to also make a purchase. The main concern of The Times’ as I had stated earlier is the development of young brains being disrupted in cause children come in contact with the “drug.”

  37. Advantages may include more oppurtunities for jobs and less people living in poverty due to the income being received from selling the legalized drug. Disadvantages may include people becoming more dependant in the drug and causing trouble. Precautions include showing proof that are over 21 and also limitations pertaining to how much consumers can buy. Colorado residents are only allowed 38 grams of pot and non-residents are limited to only a quarter of an ounce. A concern that the New York Times writes about os how marijuana is being presented as pertains to children. Some pot products are laced inside candy this kind of representation could appeal to children. New York Time states that marijuana us an adult drug and should be presented as one.

  39. I think it would be beneficial to legalize Marijuana. It would create job opportunities, save people from going to jail for selling pot verses rape and murder, and the state would benefit in tax revenues. There are standards to buying pot, you must 21 or older, and have been issued a license to buy or sell. Disadvantages include the use of Marijuana in candy that has been laced, causing people to trip out, and appealing to children. However, most companies inform their buyers of exactly what Marijuana is so they know what they are getting themselves into, both physically and psychologically. As well, the crime rate has not gone up due to anything related to the use of Marijuana.

  40. We all know with any legalization of a product which is for the most part illegal there are basic advantages and disadvantages, however we have to look beyond those basic viewpoints. Yes, legalizing marijuana will create an industry. People will be paid to produce the marijuana, others to deliver it, and many more to sell. Contractors and construction workers will be employed to build new buildings and storefronts; marketplaces where the cannabis exchange will occur. These are just some of the more direct and obvious examples of how cannabis being legalized will create industry. In even more depth, creative innovation will meet the cannabis market forging new markets and even more industries entirely. One example is the emerging culinary cannabis market resulting in the distribution of cannabis in forms such as brownies, candy, cookies, pastries, etc. Without a doubt literature teaching curious prospective consumers how to create these items will also result in the sale of books as well as the restaurant industry hiring chefs to produce these would be treats to a population that is growing to crave them. Not to mention, the television market which would have a need to advertise these new innovation. The web is endless, as I fathom numerous outer ways cannabis can be industrialized and marketed. With new legalization comes regulations. Colorado's regulation limits marijuana growth to 6 plants per household. Of course how can we regulate someone's personal backyard? Consumers will become greedy. With their inch, they'll only desire a mile. 6 plants wont be enough and the will begin to grow an increasing amount for neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family to buy. This introduces the con of an underground market. 40% of marijuana grown is for "personal use". Now its suppose to be an adult market but who are they really fooling when they produce cannabis in the form of kid-friendly cookies and candies? The underground market would not be limited to adults but also kids. They would buy it in what appears to be a treat and sell incognito. But what worriies the NY times the most it the affect on the undeveloped adolescent brains. Again, there are advantages such as Colorado's increase in tourism. However, this is only a short term increase because Colorado's competing neighbors will begin to legalize marijuana and the exclusivity which creates tourism will die down with people saying "If I can get cannabis here, why travel?" Obviously crime will decrease because the amount of people criminalized for cannabis involvement will no longer be criminals. Now we have to decide if the advantages of tax revenue on the economy is most important when you consider the cons.

  41. There are some major advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana. It will be a major decrease in many industries such as pharmacies and therapy centers. It will be a major increase in research and cancer treatment help. Marijuana also helps brain tumors cells get destroyed. Many accidents will take place because more people will be careless and happy that they would not care about anything else.. Marijuana will have a major effect of pharmacies because more medicine will be terminated because Marijuana will treat almost anything. The New York Times think that this legalization will have a big effect on the minds of minors..

  42. There are many advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana in Colorado. One advantage is that marijuana brought a lot tourism to Colorado. Colorado beat out all the warm weather resorts during spring break. Applications to universities were brought up by a third because of the legalization. One store in Colorado, Euflora, has 80% of customers that are from out of town. Another advantage of the legalization is that it will be an industry, it will create more jobs which will help are economy. You would need people to create the buildings, work in it, deliver the product, and so on. Marijuana is also beneficial to people who have disease, such as cancer, because it acts as an aid or relief. The obvious advantage would be tax revenue in Colorado. A disadvantage would be that minors could get a hold of it, for instance the cannabis food. Also people can become to dependent on marijuana. Precautions should be in place so that it isn't so easy to poses if your not caring the medical marijuana card or over the required age. Regulations such as the amount of marijuana you can buy and that it's not allowed in airports have been enforced. As noted by the New York Times the main concern for the legalization is that foods, such as candies, are laced with marijuana. There have been reports of to much consumption of the cannabis foods causing illness.

  43. With the legalization of marijuana in Colorado come several advantages. Among these are the fact that it would possibly limit crime linked with the drug to a lower level and it would also keep several people out of jail. Especially the younger the folks who are constantly being penalized for a drug that does not kill as opposed to ciggaretes that DO kill and is legal. Marijuana also helps sooth and relieve many illnesses and diseases such as schizophrenia and people who have reoccurring seizures. Though the advantages of the legalization of this drug outweigh the bad, the disadvantages of this drug include "overuse" and when younger people do it, it can slowly kill brain cells which is bad because younger folks don't even much have their entire brain yet developed until the age of 21 (give or take). Regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry include the amount of which you can purchase and it isn't allowed in airports. New York times is concerned about the younger population in taking too much of the drug because of possible effects it may have on minors.

  44. When it comes to the subject of the legalization of marijuana, there are many advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado would be the builidng insdustry and tourism that Colorado is obtaining due to sales. Also, there is the added marijuana taxes on the sales, and the legalization brought the opportunity for the owners of these companies to obtain large amounts of money. Medical marijuana also has successfully treated illnesses such as scoliosis, tumors and more. In addition, the crime rate and traffic fatalities are down from the previous year. The disadvantages include the problems in collections due to almost half of the marijuana sold is either grown for personal use and is not taxed or sold illegally. Also, the requirment of paying in cash also calls for the armed guards tp transport money. Dealing with the drugs, many concerns have to do with the effects that the drugs have on the people that take them. Sife effects unclude hallucinations and paranoia. When stopped my police, impaired drivers cant take tests to indicated the level of intoxication. Once the drug is ingested, it can stay in the body for periods of time, though the effects had worn off. The regulations that have been created includes the controlling of the age limit to enter a store. Residents are able to buy an ounce while others who dont live in Colorado are only subjected to a quarter of an ounce. In Colorado, marijuana is not allowed in airports and not allowed to be taken over the Colorado border into other states. The New York Times' main concern is the impact of marijuana on the developing child's mind. Because sellers of marijuana also distribute thedrug in gummies and edibles, if the edibles had ever fallen into a kids hands it would be dangerous.

  45. Legalizing Marijuana in the U.S obviously comes with tons of advantages and disadvantages. Economy wise legalizing marijuana will increase the job market and the cash flow for the U.S as a whole. As we can learn from Colorado, legalizing marijuana has way more positive effects then negative effects. Keeping the strict age limit at 21for having a card that allows you to purchase marijuana is a must so that the substance isn't abused by minors who are a lot less responsible. It states in the article that only about half of the consumed marijuana in Colorado was from legal stores, this isn't necessarily good news but it is a start for the business for legal marijuana distribution. I think that in time the numbers will increase in favor of the legally consumed marijuana because it has less risk for the consumers. The disadvantages of legalizing pot is that there will always be an underground source to get what you are looking for and this will take away from the taxed goods which takes money away from the state. Marijuana alters your mind and how you think which can cause problems when people decide to operate motor vehicles, so marijuana and alcohol must have similar charges when people start making poor decisions under the influence. In all marijuana will do more good for the states that legalize it than it will harm them so i think that legalization in all states is inevitable.

  46. The legalization of Marijuana is always a controversial topic due to the many advantages and disadvantages that it presents. Some advantages are creating an entire industry that no longer has to be sold underground. Since marijuana was legalized there, the rates of tourism have gone up and the state of Colorado is making crazy amounts of money. Also, marijuana is a great natural remedy, it helps aid patients who suffer from seizures and schizophrenia. Some disadvantages may be that some of the marijuana might fall into the wrong hands. Children may see their parents smoking or eating an edible and then they'll assume its ok. I believe that there should be an age limit to be able to posses marijuana (Age 21). The New York times believe that each state should be given the power to legalize weed themselves.

  47. The legalization of marijuana has many advantages that seem to outweigh disadvantages in many ways. The marijuana industry brings an enormous amount of revenue to the economy because opposed to people selling it illegally & pocketing all of the money, the govt is able to tax it, both for medicinal use and recreational use. Also, crime rates have lowered and marijuana has proven to be less harmful and addictive than alcohol or cigarettes. Marijuana also has wonderful medicinal uses and can help many people with a wide variety of conditions. Some disadvantages include attracting minors to this drug which can negatively effect brain development. It seems to be especially attractive now that a variety of candies & other sweet treats have been fused with the hallucinogen thc.

  48. The advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are that it benefit to the economy by increasing revenue, and lowers traffic fatalities and violent crimes. People are vacationing to Colorado which will bring revenue for tourists, and if you're on marijuana you drive slower which won't cause havoc on the road. When comparing marijuana addiction to tobacco or alcohol addiction, there are only small problems. Also, marijuana can be used to treat illnesses.
The disadvantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado are that the marijuana can sometimes be sold illegally, and only 60% is grown to be sold legally; the other 40% is grown for personal use. Only $12 million of $33.5 million in marijuana taxes is being collected. There also happens to be a tragic accident where a man shot his wife to death, but that can be rebutted by saying he took over a recommended dose of marijuana. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages because the main goal is to bring in the money.
Regulations created for the marijuana industry are how there's a certain limit to how much you can personally grow, taxes on marijuana to generate revenue for Colorado, and age control. You must be 21 of age to purchase marijuana legally. If you are a resident of Colorado you can buy up to an ounce, but if you're a visitor of Colorado you can only buy up to a quarter of an ounce. These regulations are reasonable with no complaint.
The major concern about the legalization of marijuana as noted by the New York Times is how marijuana impacts the development of adolescent brains. The body does not stop growing until about the age of 21, so it is understandable that the age limit is at 21.

  49. Legalizing marijuana comes with many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages from legalizing marijuana was that it brought a lot of tourism to the state, making it "the most popular spring break destination this year." traffic facilities and crime was reduced. It would bring more wealth to store owners due to the amount of purchases being made and the added marijuana taxes. It would be an industry, creating more jobs, which would be enabling more and more people to work. There is no significant health risk for healthy adults, nor was it considered to be a gateway drug. Disadvantages would be problems in collections because many people would either grow for personal use or sell it illegally, therefore not putting any taxes on it. Hallucinations and Paranoia are some side effects. People could become dependent on it. It could be easily access to children and effecting their brains. Regulations that were created for the marijuana industry would be strictly enforcing the age limit on who would be able to go in the stores, let alone purchase something. The amount that one is able to purchase is also limited. People are also restricted from bringing marijuana into airports. The New York Time's main concern is that marijuana could have an impact on developing adolescent brains and it could be easier access because they are made in gummies and edibles, making it more appealing to them.

  50. There are multiple advantages of creating a legal marijuana market. If the government is able to sell marijuana then they can also tax it. They can add the same amount of tax if not more that they put on alcohol. Another advantage would be that legalization is creating more jobs. The disadvantages are that some tourists are buying marijuana legally and bringing it back home to where it is illegal. In order to buy the drug legally you have to be 21 years or older. Also if you bring it out of state it is once again considered illegal. The new york times made a point of saying that it was reported that 12.5 of all the driving citations for the first five months of the year were due to people being impaired by marijuana.

  51. There are many justifiable advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana . Some adavntages will be the rise in income due to the creation of new jobs.More and more shops will surface for employment. Another advantage is that it can be used as a medical pain killer and for appetite. Marijuana can be used forms apart from smoking it and can be used for people of variety of ages with medical problems. Legalizing marijuana will also decrease the imprisonment of working class americans who are caught and jailed for marijuana possession. That being said, also leaving a permanent record making it harder to find jobs. Disadvantages of this legalization can be an increase find in cancer. Majority of marijuana users smoke it. The smoke getting into the lungs can result in lung cancer. Also another reason is that our brain cells are not fully developed until we are 21, under that age brain cells can be damaged. But to take a side, i believe it would be a good economical decision for parts of the U.s.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to legalizing marijuana.
Advantages include lower prices, less inmates at jails which results in lower taxes for citizens, less deaths for dealer conflicts, and the taxing on marijuana would bring in a lot of money which could be used to give schools more funding.
Disadvantages include more accidents on the road from driving under the influence of marijuana, pharmacists making less money because they cannot have high prices on medicinal marijuana since it will be legal and sold in many places, and there will be more cases of lung cancer since more people will be smoking.
Regulation include an age minimum of 21 to purchase marijuana, citizens are only allowed to buy an ounce at a time, and the product cannot leave the state's borders.
For the NYT, the major concern of the legalization of marijuana is the fact that marijuana will impact the development of adolescent brains.

  54. Marijuana is America's third most popular drug. Some may say, "What is the difference between marijuana and a cigarette?" Others may add "I can do as I wish." This drug which originated from the hemp plant carries a lot of controversy. The advantages of the legalization of marijuana in Colorado is that those who suffer from illnesses like Alzheimer's, glaucoma, epilepsy, and even multiple sclerosis can benefit from some of marijuana's ingredients. Many can earn large sums of money as an owner of a recreational pot store. The great migration of people to Colorado help the state with tourism as well. The disadvantages of marijuana being legalized in Colorado include non-Coloradoans paying most of Colorado's tax revenues, pot stores are charged fifteen percent retail excise taxes, and marijuana is being sold illegally. Marijuana jeopardizes health by blocking memory formation, increasing the risk of depression, creates hallucinations, and even intensifies fear, panic, or anxiety. The regulations created for the marijuana industry means that ties can be broken with marijuana sellers who sell to minors, across state lines, and laundering money. To enter a pot store and purchase pot you must be 21 or older. Colorado airports do not permit marijuana as well. According to the New York Times, their major concern is marijuana's impact on developing adolescent brains. The New York Times believes that marijuana is an adult drug and should be marketed as such. The high many get from marijuana is said to come from the chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Most of THC's effects on the brain interacts with cannibinoid receptors in the brain. THC adopts natural ways to make most of its ways. After a first high, one way try to create the same or better high. After a while, the brain can become mush. Period.

  55. I am a supporter for the legalization of marijuana and believe it should be legalized in every state in this nation. The Legalization of marijuana is a tough call to make for not only law makers across the nation, but parents as well. We all know that this well known drug has very little good health effects so some may think if it does not help the health of the residents of this nation... Why legalize it? U.S. citizens need to stop looking at short-term effects such as health because we all know its not the greatest thing for you. I beg you to consider the lasting effects it will have on this country. Colorado is a prime example of the good that can come out of legalizing this drug. We can start off with one of the greatest effects this drug has brought upon. Crime rate. One of the biggest fears of Americans everywhere is the amount of crime you see in the newspaper, on the Internet, and now even in the daily news. Let's visit the recent shooting at Sandy Hook and other elementary's across the world. These shootings devastated so many people. It destroyed families, friends, and eventually brought this country to our knees. I would like to ask you a simple question.. Would you rather an insane man take innocent kids lives or smoke marijuana? Now none of us can really tell what this man was thinking at the time but what we can say is this could have been prevented. What if this man was going through a great deal of stress at the time of this event and all it would have took to call him down was a joint or two. This is something we should all think about before turning down the legalization of marijuana so quickly. The highest cause for deaths in this country stems from drugs. If we have a chance to save countless number of teens and adults from dying a death that could easily be prevented.. Why not? For all you parents that think your child is too good to get caught up in drugs, check again. Marijuana is everywhere and no matter how hard you try the drug war will go on and proceed to get more and more violent. Before stand around and wait for your child to get caught up in drugs or just caught in the crossfire of a drug war, legalize it to eliminate that worry. You cannot pick and choose what happens in this world, all you can do is do your very best to avoid and protect the people you love from any hurt, harm, or danger that presents itself. Colorado has seen a dramatic decrease in crime due to the legalization of marijuana and I think it will continue to decrease. Finance is another aspect of marijuana that tends to be looked over. This drug has brought close to $50M in revenue to the state of Colorado and I can think of many other states that greatly stand in need of this money. This can go toward the building of schools, libraries and other various accommodations. This $50 M does not include the amount of tourism Colorado has received since the legalization. As a recent resident of Colorado I see many bright things ahead and I hope other states make the smart choice of legalizing this drug as well.

When it comes to legalizing marijuana in Colorado, there are many advantages but as well disadvantages. Let's start with advantages. The employment rate would go sky high due to the fact that new jobs will be open to be able to sell the product. Cash flow would definitely increase as well, so it well surly help the economy. Another advantage would be treating people with illnesses and allowing the drug to help them recover on an aspect. Just imagine the amount of lives that are saved daily just because of this one particular drug. Colorado has the advantage of making lots of money off of tourism just because people want to get there hands on this particular drug. Which points out another advantage that it being legal, crime rates have decreased tremendously since drug dealers or anyone with the drug don't have to worry about getting arrested. Some disadvantages include for example people driving under the influence which can cause accidents depending on the person and their tolerance level. Marijuana also can kill brain cells due to the THC in it. Some regulations include the age you can buy the drug, the amount that you can buy depending if your a resident or not, and even how much someone can plant on their own. New York Times really described that their main concern with all this is the impact of marijuana on an adolescent brain. So it will have an effect on children and teenager's brain because the brain is not fully developed until the age of 21. Those are the advantages and disadvantages of legalizing marijuana.

  57. The advantages of creating marijuana market in Colorado is that when marijuana is legalized, there will be a chance and opportunity to make more money and people just come to the store just to buy the marijuana and nothing else and it is a reliever for those who are stressed out. So basically while selling the marijuana the Colorado store will have more money than it ever did before; which is an advantage. People nowadays are getting jobs and crime rates are going down, meanwhile students are in college and when they are overwhelmed with work they buy marijuana to keep them forced and calm. The disadvantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that they sell marijuana's in candies, chocoloate and cookies. This is a disadvantage because little children love those types of snacks to munch on and if they ever get their hands on one of that it is bad and it would affect their brains much faster than the adults. Another disadvantage would be that the adults are growing about six marijuana plants for their own personal use but they are selling it to other people illegally and those people can have side affects on the it. The regulations that have been created for the marijuana industries is that the amount to spend to buy the them an basically the age that you can get them for which is the age of 21 and you cannot sell the to the kids 18 years and younger. The main concern about legalization of the marijuana by the New York Times is the concern for the children because some adults are not influencing to the young minds.

  58. Colorado's new outlook on the legality of marijuana potentially gives birth to brand new market. The introduction of the market, like any other product, can bring about advantages as well as disadvantages. Regulations must be made to appease the many concerns that may be brought up. In terms of advantages, marijuana's legalization can spawn a new source of revenue for the Coloradan government, stemming from general sales and taxes on the product. Crime rate will also decrease, as Colorado's police force can focus on actual crimes in the state, as opposed to giving attention to situations as ridiculous as arresting people for carrying negligible amounts of the drug. President Obama himself has said the federal government has “bigger fish to fry” and won’t aggressively prosecute users in states where its marijuana use is legal.
Albeit the "extra time" reallocated will end up getting spent on tracking down drug smuggling into states who haven't come to their senses yet, an unfortunate disadvantage. Health concerns include the effects marijuana may have on the undeveloped mind. The NY Times' Roni Rabin writes that "experts worry that the perception of marijuana is changing because its stigma as an outlawed drug has eroded." However, both Colorado and Washington has placed regulations that restrict recreational marijuana use to adults age 21 and over.

  59. Marijuana is a billion dollar industry and Colorado just set it free. The mention of marijuana will always stir controversy in today’s society. Throughout the debate there seems to be more advantages to legalizing marijuana than there are disadvantages. The rapid uprising of this drug is starting to take its effect on certain states such as Colorado that has just recently legalized marijuana. Colorado has become a tourist destination just because of their care-free attitude of the legalization of pot. More students are applying to colleges in Colorado because of the easy access to the drug. Also tourists bring loads of money into hotels and businesses. Although pot is legal not everyone is allowed to sell and buy pot. Individuals are only allowed to grow up to six plants for “personal use”. Marijuana is a billion dollar industry and now since the drug is legalized, the government is expected to make up to $34 million dollars in tax money off of it. Marijuana will bring in more money to the economy because a whole new branch of market is being introduced. The drug is also used for illnesses such as tumors, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, and anorexia. Those who are diagnosed with anorexia are often treated with marijuana to help them create an appetite. Disadvantages of the drug begin with young kids getting their hands on pot laced treats that can alter their mind while it is still in development. There are pot laced cookies, candies, drinks, lollipops that all seem to be aimed to entice kids. Marijuana should be legalized but handled as an adult drug with strict rules. Marijuana will always be frowned upon because it is a drug and is stereotypically grouped together with other non-relatable harsh drugs such as heroin, cocaine, or lsd. Although studies have shown that marijuana is not known to be a gate way drug. The debate of whether there are more disadvantages or advantages to marijuana is immortal. It should be every states individual right to decide whether or not to legalize marijuana.

  60. There are many advantages and disadvantages that can be discussed concerning the legalization of marijuana. One advantage of legalizing marijuana is that it increases tax revenue by a considerable amount. In Colorado they received about $12 million from taxes on marijuana in the fiscal years ending in June. An additional advantage is that it could help those who have medical issues. It has been known to help those with severe pain, sclerosis, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors and more. It has also helped those with chronic epilepsy. One disadvantage is that there is not an efficient way to collect taxes from all legalized marijuana in a state, especially from home grown marijuana that is grown for personal use. An additional disadvantage is that is it easy to consume to much of a pot-laced candy/drink, creating serious hallucinations and possibly fatal actions. Another disadvantage is that with the legalization of marijuana there may be more intoxicated drivers on the road. Not only may there be more intoxicated drivers on the road, but it is impossible to detect the level of a marijuana user's intoxication. The only thing that can be detected is a chemical that can remain in one's body for day's or week's after the affects of marijuana have subsided. The regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry, at least in Colorado, are that one cannot buy more than an ounce of marijuana at a time if they are a resident of the state in which it is legalized, one cannot buy more that a quarter of an ounce of marijuana at a time if they are not a resident of the state in which it is legalized, one cannot grow more that four marijuana plants at one's residence, and one cannot carry marijuana into an airport or across state borders. The main concern about the legalization of marijuana, as noted by the New York Times, is that marijuana has a drastic impact on the development of adolescent brains. As the marijuana manufactures market this drug as a candy, it will surely entice or intrigue children. If children got a hold of these types of drugs, the results could be fatal. Although many may say that other states could ban the marketing of marijuana as a candy, it is very likely that those other states with follow the pattern of society in its marketing habits until something drastic happens to some child somewhere. In my opinion, I believe that medical marijuana should absolutely be legalized as it has many health advantages that could help people across this and many other states. However, I don't quite agree with the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana, as I believe that people will abuse this right, only valuing it because it gives them pleasure. I do not believe that one should consume or smoke marijuana simply for pleasure.

  62. Advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that it give owners a chance to make a lot of money. $40 million of marijuana tax revenue in Colorado has gone into public schools construction. Crime is down, and traffic fatalities are down. More people are moving there meaning more money. It also has help many people medically, like kids with seizures, and adults with chronic health problems. Coloradoans have more jobs available to them. The states has garnered more than $10 million in taxes from marijuana stores. Some disadvantages are the impact it has on developing adolescent brains. Altered perceptions that can cause death and hallucinations. Regulations that have been passed is that you must be 21and older to sell or take marijuana. Limited to buying an once (28 grams) of marijuana. Not allowed to pass the border with it or in airports. Only allowed to grow 6 plants. The New Times main concern is with the impact of marijuana on adolescent. They should not sell marijuana candies because its easier for kids to get a hold of it. And that the federal government should let states decide on legalization for themselves. The times says that marijuana is not a gateway to other drugs.

  63. Advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that, medical marijuana has successfully treated multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors and more, Colorado was the most popular spring break destination this year, .Applications to universities in Colorado are up by a third, Non-Coloradoans are responsible for much of the state's tax revenues from legal marijuana sale, the employment rate would go up, the crime rate would go down because a lot of people would actually get to keep doing what they're doing without getting busted for it and without it being illegal, ands tudies show legalization has not brought major problems, Traffic fatalities are down from last year and down from the 13-year average. Crime, including violent crime, is also down. To continue on, some disadvantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado is that Colorado faces a problem in collections because about 40 percent of the marijuana sold in Colorado is either grown for personal use and not taxed, There have been a few reported incidents of high doses of edibles sickening people, Most of THC's effects on the brain interacts with cannibinoid receptors in the brain. THC adopts natural ways to make most of its effects. After a first high, one way try to create the same or better high. After a while your brain could become mushed, Stores also are charged 15 percent retail excise taxes. Perino says her store remits $50,000 to $70,000 in tax revenues a month. Of the estimated 287,000 pounds expected to be consumed this year, only about 170,000 pounds will come from legal medical or recreational outlets because of the 40% not taxted, also the candies would entice kids if they ever fell within their reach. Regulations that have been created for the marijuana industry are, To enter a pot store in Colorado, or to buy, you have to show proof of being 21 or over, Marijuana is not allowed in Colorado airports, Colorado residents are limited to buying an ounce (28 grams). out-of-towners, it's a quarter of an ounce, and of course no selling to minors. The major concern about the legalization of marijuana as noted by the New York Times is with marijuana's impact on developing adolescent brainsif minors get a hold of it but i say they let whoever use if they want its their life! most teens 17 and younger im sure are alraedy using marijuana so once you atleast hit 17 i think you should be able to use marijuana as long as you know to control yourself and follow the limited amount you're allowed to have, because adults are using it and doing illiterate thing that they're trying to prevent us from doing but really who are they saving? if adults are messing up because of it.

  64. The legalization of marijuana in Colorado has proven to have many advantages, starting with a huge increase of tax revenue. Colorado is estimated to make $34,000,000 in taxes, this year alone. Not only does Colorado get a lot of money from taxes on marijuana but they also generate revenue though all the new tourists who are attracted to the care free environment. Not only will Colorado's economy benefit from the legalization of marijuana but so will people with crippling illness, such as Parkinson's and glaucoma. Legalization also come with disadvantages though, for example kids getting into pot while their brains are still developing and people driving under the influence. In order too keep things from spiraling out of control, regulations have been made. To buy weed in Colorado you have to have your ID and be 21 years of age and Colorado residents are only allowed to buy an ounce of weed while tourists are only allowed to buy a quarter of an ounce. Although there are many pros to the legalization of pot, the NY times is concerned for the safety of children. They fear kids might get into the drug and it may effect their brains.

  65. The legalization of marijuana has long been a controversy for our nation. The federal government probably still remembers the times of rebellious hippies in 1960's, because the this pre-historical time frame, government officials have been more than hesitant to allow our country to use marijuana and letting citizens get high, proclaim freedom and run around until they get sober again. Undoubtedly, they are certain advantages for the approval of marijuana. The government might want to revise its view, since the taxation of marijuana is a great source of revenue ($12 million) and for Colorado accounts for the number of migrations to the legalized state, applications to universities in Colorado are up by a third. Medicinal marijuana has scientifically been proven to treat sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, Parkinson's, tumors, and more, but Governor Branstad, a strong opposer of medical marijuana, believes the state needs to take precautions before expanding the use of cannabis, because cannabis oil has only been legal for weeks in Iowa. Another benefit, The New York Times stated, for the use of marijuana is no significant health risks for healthy adults, and it is not a gateway to other drugs. I guess this how Denver has been able to maintain lower crimes and traffic fatalities compared to the 13-year average (which in my opinion, is a long time period to compare with), however this does not PROVE marijuana is the reason of these lower incursions. Legalization of marijuana also comes with its disadvantages, for instance, since cannabis can be consumed in forms of candy, pastries, and drinks, kids and teens are attracted to these adult treats for mistaken snacks. The author and I agree, according to New York Times', "the main concern is with marijuana's impact on developing adolescent brains," the consumables should be out of reach of kids and teens. Thankfully, the state limits the purchasing of cannabis to an ounce (as if an ounce is going to keep folks satisfied). To conclude, as marijuana becomes more widely acceptable to this day and age, we should be taking steps to raise awareness. We have proven medical marijuana is beneficial for those with diseases and illnesses. but we must be aware the adversities of legalizing marijuana are the conventional use by teens and quite possibly children.

  66. The advantages of creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado includes but isn’t limited to a surplus in collected tax revenue which could go towards funding of schools, federal jobs and other government assets. The regulations that have been created for the marinjuana industry include the fact that an individual cannot own more than six marijuana plants. The major concern as noted by the New York Times is the effect of marijuana on the youth. The forms in which the marijuana is being sold and advertise can be appealing to a younger audience and therefore attract the wrong type of consumers (children). The target audiencee, as noted by the NYT, should remain adults and the products made from marijuana should remain more mature and attract an older audience.

  67. Oh, and the disadvantages include stricter laws in the attempt to make marijuana abide by some of our most common laws as well as the drug effects it has on its users. While marijuana tends to lean towards the more relaxed side, it also has more energetic effects, this when used while driving or operating on heavy machinery can cause injury or life-loss

  70. Creating a legal marijuana market in Colorado, for one, has filled the gov'ts pockets with money from the tax on it, seeing as how popular marijuana is and has been but now even more because of its legalization. Another advantage is less people getting themselves into trouble because of illegal sales and possessions. However, there are pros and cons to everything. America already hasa a problem with drinking and driving. Now that marijuana has been legalized and it is so popular, driving high is going to be a problem. Driving under the influence of any mood altering substance is never a good idea. Another problem is the people who have been pr are being punished right now for illegal possession. What about them? These people may not be a concern to the government but small conflicts may erupt. After all, I would be pretty upset if I were in prison for something that is now legal. As for regulations, 20 out of the 23 states that have legalized marijuana require proof of residency to purchase the product. There is also a maximum amount for how much you can have at a a time. The Times' biggest concern about the legalization of pot is the development of adolescents. They believe that marijuana should not be sold in candies because of the appeal it has to kids. They believe that marijuana is a drug for adults and should stay that way.

  71. Some advantages of medical marijuana are that every buy of medical marijuana will be taxed through the roof and allow the government to make a enormous amount of money for each sell. Also the crime rate in Colorado will go down because a majority of the arrests in Colorado are from distribution of marijuana. Another positive thing that will come out of the legalization of marijuana would be that it helps cure the sick of cancer, etc.
Some disadvantages are that the if a child under the age of 21 receives this drug and uses it for harmful intent, it could lead to brain altering incidents. Another disadvantage is that the dispensers are going to tax even more on top of what the government already taxes on it which is unacceptable and ridiculous.
Some regulations that have been put into the medical marijuana legalization is that anyone under the age of 21 is unable to buy it. Another regulation is that you are unable to cross the border and sell without it being considered illegal.
The New York Times has said that the leagalization will lead to the adolescence mind not being able to fully develop.

  72. Some of the advantages that medical marijuana can provide in Colorado are that marijuana by itself is already popular, let alone the fact that the government can make big budgets of cash by selling it with tax, although it still bans marijuana, but happily collect from the legal sale's tax. Whether or not it's true, marijuana can also cure certain sicknesses like cancer, etc. Studies have also shown that the crime rate varies to the distribution of marijuana in Colorado. Those would be the positive benefits from creating a marijuana market.
On the other hand, disadvantages can include Colorado faces a problem in collections because some of the marijuana sold in Colorado is either grown for personal use and not taxed, it's legal to grow six plants, or sold illegally. The Colorado Legislature enforces marijuana businesses to start its own banking cooperative, however, there will be of course some issues concerning that proposal.
The New York Times concludes that the legalization of marijuana and its impact may cause the development of adolescent brains. Manufacturers would disguise marijuana as candies, and that's how the drug would appeal to kids. Simply, marijuana is an adult drug, and it should marketed that way, nothing more or less.

  73. The legalization of marijuana in the state of Colorado has been an Internet sensation since its inception. Of course, as with any big and controversial action, the debate over legal marijuana is full of pros and cons.
Among the pros of marijuana legalization, the biggest would be it's good for business. Aside from saving on prison costs and costs related to prosecuting offenders, taxes on legal pot have definitely boosted the state's income. Similarly, while the state income goes up, drug trafficking organizations suffer losses.
Furthermore, government regulation can be used to regulate the proper quality, amount, and usage of the substance by consumers. It can also be used to provide freely available education about how marijuana can be used and consumed properly.
In the bigger picture, this recent legalization can be viewed as a running experiment for the other states and governments to learn what effects and results to expect, thereby providing a better idea of the path ahead if they should follow suit.
Marijuana has been reported to help with medical issues ranging from simple pain relief, to glaucoma treatment, to an appetite stimulator for patients suffering from cancer, AIDS or anorexia.
Marijuana’s potential effect on the medical community may be unclear at this point, but one thing is certain: It’s economic impact is massive. In an interview with Katie Couric, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper estimated that his state will bring in between $60 and $100 million in marijuana-related taxes this year, and as much as $130 in 2015.
Hemp can be used as an agricultural commodity, and could help reduce America’s Carbon Footprint with hemp derived bio-fuels. It can also save trees, as it can generate more and better paper, without damaging the soil. It is estimated that hemp can produce 3-4 times more paper per acre than trees. Hemp can be used in farming to heal and clean soil.
    Cons :
Prices are not going down. In Colorado, according to NBC News on Wednesday, “On the first day of legal weed sales, Gillette (from NORML) said she found retailers selling top-shelf marijuana to recreational users at prices close to $400 per ounce, not including taxes. The supply and demand would fluctuate because everyone who needs or wants it would grow it and those who are licened to sell would make little or no profit.

  74. Marijuana has advantages and disadvantages. Advantages would be using marijuana for medical uses only, crime rate would decrease, and people who are in jail for weed will get freed. Than you have marijuana helping the economy, this drug creates tons of money for the corner stores and on the black market. Disadvantages would include people smoking freely for their on use not for medical purposes. Another one would be selling for as their product, and increase in deaths because people may drive while smoking marijuana. A regulation they created included not obtaining marijuana unless you are 21 or over. No selling over the border, Colorado residents can only buy an ounce or marijuana, and people not from Colorado get quarter of an ounce. The New York Times has a problem with adolescents using the weed and going out of control with it and smoking a ton of weed messing up their brains and etc.
